If you know that corundum (ruby/sapphire etc) is a 9 and you test the stone and it ranks up there near a diamond but not quite, then you can assume that the gemstone you're testing is a genuine ruby or sapphire. The diamond tester, I have found to be rather accurate. You do have to be careful with this item, since if you are trying to test diamond CHIPS or very small diamonds in large settings, and it hits the metal it will go off with a rather loud, continuous beeping noise to say "Error" that it's hitting the metal. Suggestion: Use the tester on a genuine diamond (one you're certain is diamond) so you can get a feel for what it sounds like when it hits the 10 spot on the scale and what sound it makes."

"Yes, there is a calibration requirement that must be done several times a day using a good piece of 14 k yellow (post plumb law), but simply pick a piece that works, stick a tag on it, and use the same piece all the time. It is always spot on with 10, 14 and 18 k...sometimes older 14 k white will test in between 10 and 14, but that is just because of the way white gold used to be alloyed."

"I now use this tester as a "second opinion" when testing valuable heavy gold items, so in that regard it is still a usable tool. With so many items stamped gold or are marked at a higher karat than they actually are, I bought this tester as a back-up test to the standard acid testing that I have used since I started in the business in 1979. Maybe this claim could be substantiated under ideal circumstances in a laboratory, but in real life day in and day out use (and being generous), I would say it is good for only 1/3 of that number- this before the auricle alerts you that you need to replace probe. I do a low volume business (testing 3-10 gold items a day) and have replaced the probe 3 times in as many months, even though I religiously replace the probe cap after every use. This is a first generation product that in time may be improved to the point where the science and practicality reach a happy medium, but as it stands I still must constantly rely on my tried and true acid testing to be completely accurate, as there are times when the Auracle tests can jump from one end of the spectrum to the other."
