Mine was old and brittle - and it broke off when I tried to remove it....such that I had to carefully (and painstakingly) fish out the pieces that fell in the valve cover port. Of course the manufacturer prefers lesser pleats because that means less material so less cost. Despite the lesser pleats, this filter is pretty thick due to the carbon and baking soda. That's sort of a big deal since that means these filters are not a complete seal as air will flow through the hole of least resistance. The number of pleats is slightly important to me but it isn't enough to deter me to purchase a more expensive filter. I suggest you buy this filter due to the pretty awesome price of $9."
