Night Sky with Exit Wounds
"There is a powerful emotional undertow to these poems that springs from Mr. Vuong's sincerity and candor, and from his ability to capture specific moments in time with both photographic clarity and a sense of the evanescence of all earthly things." In his haunting and fearless debut, Ocean Vuong walks a tightrope of historic and personal violences, creating an interrogation of the American body as a borderless space of both failure and triumph. At once vulnerable and redemptive, dreamlike and visceral, compassionate and unforgiving, these poems seek a myriad existence without forgetting the prerequisite of self-preservation in a world bent on extinguishing its othered voices. " Reading Vuong is like watching a fish move: he manages the varied currents of English with muscled intuition....His lines are both long and short, his pose narrative and lyric, his diction formal and insouciant. "Even as Vuong leads you through every pleasure a body deserves and all the ensuing grief, these poems restore you with hope, that godforsaken thing--alive, singing along to the radio, suddenly sufficient." His poems appear in Kenyon Review, The Nation, New Republic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Poetry, and The American Poetry Review, which awarded him the Stanley Kunitz Prize for Younger Poets.
Reviews

Portrait of the Alcoholic
And yet here in Kaveh Akbar's book, entreaty is earnest, aimed at the human and particular more often than the divine but at the same time the language and form elevate themselves to the fevered register of desperation. Yes, sure, fine, you would think that a Muslim writing about being a drunk would have to adopt unconventional approaches, but drunkenness in the Islamic literary tradition is a long and time-honored metaphor. The reason we Muslims do not pray for things is that it is similarly dangerous for one to call God's attention onto oneself.
Reviews
"A simply stunning mind is on display in this brief volume that showcases Akbar's willingness to stare unflinchingly into a painful past and find the beauty within those moments."
"This is a wonderful read."
"Lord these poems Kaveh Akbar da gawd."
"I enjoyed parts of this, but I guess I'm just not a fan of the disjointed feel of this style of poetry."
"Whimsical, surreal poems somewhat in the manner of Billy Collins, but smarter and more interesting."
"A jaw-dropping chapbook of incredible power."
"At that time, Amazon wouldn't permit reviews because the book was not officially released yet--which I guess would have made it a pre-view.]. Portrait of the Alcoholic, Kaveh Akbar (Little Rock, AK: Sibling Rivalry, 2017). I pre-ordered this book, so I got it about two months before its publication date. He's equally successful with the lyric whose verses, read on their own, make no sense, but read collectively create a rich, hypnotizing narrative akin to a sort of verbal pointillism."
"Hits you constantly like a fist to the chest."

Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth-Century America (Race and American Culture)
In this provocative and original exploration of racial subjugation during slavery and its aftermath, Saidiya Hartman illumines the forms of terror and resistance that shaped black identity. Saidiya Hartman is Associate Professor of English at the University of California-Berkeley.
Reviews
"This is the most profoundly important text in Black Studies."
"Saidiya Hartman is clearly a genius."
"Rather, Hartman shows how the belief that Black women were inviolable, the culture myths that Black men becoming "men" through domesticity, toil, and sites of capitalist heteropatriarchy, and more were codified to create a belief in citizenship that kept Black people from real freedom."
"This book is intense."
"Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Spiritual Friends, and Soul Physicians."
"Scenes of Subjection provides a fascinating view of slavery and its effects."
"I haven't read this book yet by Saidiya Hartman, but, if this is a poweful as "Lose Your Mohter'", it must make people very uncomfortable, which it should, regarding the genocide, rape, and torture of Africans in the land of bigoty, racism and hypocrisy."

"Thanks John, you're an inspiration for this Urban Indian RIP."

"See the Woman. She has a young face. An old face. She carries herself well. In all ages. She survives all man has done. In some tribes she is free. In some religions. She is under man. In some societies. She’s worth what she consumes. In some nations. She is delicate strength. In some states. She is told she is weak. In some classes. She is property owned. In all instances. She is sister to earth. In all conditions. She is life bringer. In all life she is our necessity. See the woman eyes. Flowers swaying. On scattered hills. Sundancing calling in the bees. See the woman heart. Lavender butterflies. Fronting blue sky. Misty rain falling. On soft wild roses. See the woman beauty. Lightning streaking. Dark summer nights. Forests of pines mating. With new winter snow. See the woman spirit. Daily serving courage. With laughter. Her breath a dream. And a prayer. John Trudell “See the Woman”. I read an article about a woman. A woman living in the war. In Central America. A woman lost her family. A woman the only survivor. A woman goes to sleep one night. A woman waking up. A woman not a mother anymore anymore. A woman held on she could not scream. A woman not submitting to the enemy. A woman praying for women. On the other side. A woman rebuilding her life. A woman in the Middle East. A woman in Europe. A woman in Africa. A woman in Asia. A woman in North America. A woman in different situations. A woman all the same. A woman pays for man’s war. John Trudell “About a Woman”. She’s not guilty not guilty not guilty. She’s a rosebush. Treat her beauty gently. Sweet love her fragrance without thorns. Don’t hurt her don’t chop her down. She can’t live as decoration in a vase. She needs to continue. Continue to bloom continue to bloom. John Trudell “Restless Situations”."
"I haven't read many poetry books since poetry isn't really my thing, but I bought this book because I have heard quite a bit about John Trudell's activism and personal life."
"Realities of love, oppression, joy and sadness, ancient grounding in the land, song, ancestors weave through the terse rich lines of each verse."
"The collected writings of the late, great Native American Philosopher, Poet, Actor and Activist."
"I love John Trudell's gut-level magnificent meaningful poetry!"
