Reviews
"This is one of Dick Francis' most slow-moving books."
"I liked it, it was a bit implausible but entertaining, with a cute young fellow investigating, and a view of UK political life... a bit of fantasy, but fun."
"I liked it the first time and I still like it."
"Survivor - writer goes to live with family of Racehorse trainer , ostensibly to write about him."
"Not the typical Francis racecourse mystery, this novel is about a father - son relationship in which the son learns to love and admire an absentee parent, and, for his part, the father learns to trust and admire the son for his courage and intelligence."
"This again shows what a great writer Dick Francis was."

Dead Heat
Death comes to the races in the brilliant new novel from the grand master of crime fiction, Dick Francis. Francis is, as always, completely convincing when it comes to the track, but his efforts at depicting the challenges and delights of cooking seem labored and secondhand (his son, Felix, is credited with the research for this book). This mix of cooking and racetrack isn't close enough to horse racing to be completely satisfying Francis, but the action and the hero's struggles deliver a solid punch.
Reviews
"The plot is complex, the other characters, although a little stereotyped, are interesting, and the interaction among the protagonist and his sons is endearing."
"I love all that I've read of books be Dick Francis."
"Families are complicated."
"Extremely enjoyable reading."
"One of the best Dick Francis, interesting characters -including the children."
"I own almost all the Dick Francis books."
"Love the authors view of the culinary arts and use of the expert Gordon Ramsey."
"Several aspects mark this fine mystery as vintage Dick Francis: 1) the connection to British horse racing. 2) since the hero is not a jockey, the occupation of the protagonist has been carefully researched. 3) the hero/protagonist triumphs over adversity by determination and persistence. 4) like a well-handled racehorse, the plot breaks out of the starting gate, maintains consistent racing speed and surges to a strong finish for another winning performance. After the first shock, I enjoyed the sensitive portrait of a man who likes to create fine food who, despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, takes arms against his sea of troubles."
