Danielle Walker's Against All Grain: Meals Made Simple: Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Paleo Recipes to Make Anytime
Beloved food blogger and New York Times bestselling author Danielle Walker is back with over 100 new Paleo recipes in her sophomore cookbook, Meals Made Simple —a collection of gluten-free, dairy-free, and Paleo-friendly recipes for easy weeknight meals. With recipes that make cooking for the grain-free family both easy and enjoyable, Meals Made Simple answers the age-old question: “What’s for dinner?” Danielle Walker takes the guesswork out of meal planning with eight weeks’ worth of dinner ideas, complete with full shopping lists and recipes for using up leftovers. Meals Made Simple includes a variety of slow cooker, one-pot, and thirty-minute meals, as well as ways to create entirely new dishes from leftovers. Despite her expansive array of medications and prednisone steroids, Danielle found herself hospitalized numerous times each year, admitted repeatedly for multiple blood transfusions due to morbidly low hemoglobin levels. She began eliminating more food groups including grains, lactose and legumes, following a plan that closely mimicked the Paleo diet. Seeing drastic progress after just 48 hours, Danielle began dedicating her free time to creating delicious comfort foods that could be enjoyed on a restricted diet. Coveting a large, but loyal following on her blog, Danielle expanded beyond the internet and released her first cookbook, Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes to Eat Well & Feel Great , in July 2013.

"Upon first receiving it and glancing through it I was a little disappointed that it seemed sparse and recipes for mayonnaise, cauli-rice and chicken stock stuck out at me. Favorite: Those few reviewers that are unhappy with this book aren't realizing that the real value is in the unbelievable amount of time and work that Ms. Walker put into making 8 weeks of meal plans! No longer do you have to open a can of coconut milk and hope the reminder doesn't go to waste, she accounts for so many of the little details like that. To elaborate, here are the things I love about this book: - meal plan with shopping lists. - indexes! By ingredients, meal type, allergens/dietary preference, time/one-pot/crock-pot and a photo index. - tear-out menu plans and shopping lists. I love that this book is a celebration of her short life and that she lives on in all our hearts and kitchens as we enjoy the fruit of their labor together."
"My eczema disappeared completely, I no longer have to take metformin for my pcos symptoms. I have leaky gut and was getting diarrhea about 3-5 times a day prier to this diet. I even started a fb group where I post pictures of each meal I make from this book."
"In her new book, Against All Grain: Meals Made Simple, she has added even more mouthwatering delights for the Paleo chef. Danielle was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at twenty-two, and she spent years in and out of hospitals and taking some heavy-duty prescriptions for her condition until she’d had enough. Now we have book two, lavishly photographed by Danielle herself and filled with tasty recipes your family will love. Danielle shows how to protect the budget by purchasing larger cuts of meat, the whole bird instead of parts and by buying in bulk. A bit like a frittata, it contains yellow onions, white sweet potatoes, bacon, bell peppers and eggs. I made the barbecue sauce (p. 250) to serve with burgers and Danielle’s cashew flour buns from her first book. My all-time favorite dessert is Lemon Sponge, a British treat that’s bursting with lemony goodness, but loaded with sugar."
"Great healthy recipes!"
"I love that there are meal plans in the back of the book as well."
"Purchased for my daughter in law."

"I also got the Wheat Belly Cookbook that's loaded with truly awful recipes, including the basic bread recipe that went directly into the trash after cutting the first slice. I sent this one back Make it Paleo: Over 200 Grain Free Recipes For Any Occasion because it was nothing special and hopelessly repetitive. If you get only one Paleo cookbook, make it this one."
"I'm not one to review items online but I was so excited about this cookbook and I've been cooking out of it since it landed on my doorstep. I've been taking notes on everything I've made so far and it seems to have helped many on Facebook and pushed some to go ahead and buy this book. My Big Fat Recipe Post - Today I decided to hole up in the kitchen and play....all day. I've been dying to try out so many recipes in the cookbook, Against All Grain, and today was my day to destroy my kitchen and fill some bellies. I have a circular dehydrator so instead of lining the trays with parchment I simply rubbed them down with coconut oil. The thinner areas around the outside of the ring did get a little crispy but I brushed them with water (as suggested) and that took care of that. After the mixture was done drying I peeled it off the tray and placed it on parchment paper and rolled it up and cut it in to strips. Carne Asada Beef Jerky (p.66) - I put together the marinade this morning and the flank steak is still chilling in the fridge awaiting its delicious but tediously long transformation in the dehydrator tomorrow. I did, however, taste the marinade before adding the beef strips and it's delicious with a little kick of cayenne that I'm hoping "M" doesn't mind. I made my own from left over roasted chickens so it's flavored with garlic and a variety of other herbs as a result of its previous life. Braised Chicken in Artichoke-Mushroom Sauce (p. 132) - I made this Saturday night and my feeling was and still is "meh." First, I didn't use home made broth, second, I didn't put in mushrooms (didn't have any on hand) and third I didn't used marinated artichoke hearts (mine were packed in water) but I did throw in a good dose of home made dry Italian dressing seasoning hoping to even the odds. We didn't let it sit in the freezer long enough to fully freeze so I won't know until tomorrow what its frozen consistency is but it certainly is delicious as soft serve. I even had a friend sub zucchini for mashed sweet potato and some walnuts. Here's Round 2 of recipe reviews: Carne Asada Beef Jerky (p.66) - Follow-up. This smelled delicious when I pulled it out of the bag in the morning and prepped it for the dehydrator. It's not tough and super chewy like store bought jerky which is nice considering "M's" lack of teeth right now. Perhaps some smoky chipotle pepper next time =-). World Famous Sandwich Bread (p.226) -First thing. The hardest part was witnessing "T's" sad face at having to wait so long for it to cool. Marinated Artichoke Hearts (p. 76). I didn't use frozen (as the recipe specified) but instead used up a MASSIVE (Cost-Co) jar that I had left in the fridge from a previous meal. I ate the entire jar while sitting on the couch watching Glee reruns. Vanilla Bean Hot Cocoa (p. 340) - It was an oddly cold August evening and quite drab at that so I decided the kids and I needed a warm cup of hot chocolate on the couch with a good movie. At any rate, mine boiled over and that's no good for anyone (including the person who gets to scrub the burned milk off the stovetop...me.). I used Lindt 70% cocoa even though the recipe said 85% or higher because we don't have an issue with dairy and it's what I had opened already. Lovely, creamy, mostly dairy free hot chocolate that beats the pants AND the socks off anything you could get in a tiny little packet. We left out the blueberries because, like my sister, "M" doesn't care for cooked fruit and I used maple syrup over honey (both are listed as options in the recipe. Don't expect any crisp here unless you coat your waffle iron in butter prior to pouring in the batter. She turned up her nose at those after awhile and preferred "Daddy" pancakes made with Bisquick. This had more steps to it and I simmered this lovely smelling broth on the stove for a day instead of in the crockpot for 24 hours like I normally do but it's delicious and clean just as I expected. Once you've got the staples in stock and a couple good appliances it takes so little time to create one of Danielle's masterpieces. In order to make this recipe dairy free it calls for palm shortening (which I can't find in less than 5 lb quantities online) or ghee. Some people can't handle the lactose at which point I would strongly advise you get your hands on or make some ghee and if you find palm shortening that comes in a smaller, less expensive quantity let me know. Ordered up a lettuce wrapped burger and then tucked it between my home made hamburger bun. She poked at it, smelled it and then discarded her "five guys" bun in favor of my home made one. My 6-year-old kept saying "oh my gosh this is SO good" between bites and scarfed down all of the left over bits of steak that I couldn't wrap around the asparagus but had sautéed to put in eggs for tomorrow's breakfast."
"This is a great book!"

"I've tried multiple recipes from this book with tasty results and look forward to trying more of them."
"Using the exact (measured by scale) measurements of ingredients resulted in a dough that was like thick pancake batter, rather than the dough ball I usually have. So, always check your dough while it is mixing/kneeding to make sure you aren't too wet or too dry."
"One thing I don't like about the book is that many of the recipes in the Whole Grain chapter aren't 100% whole grain - a few of them even contain only a small amount of whole grain flour. Despite the few things I don't like about this book, I feel that the information is so helpful that once I've tried a few more recipes and experimented a bit, I'll be able to adjust recipes successfully and maybe create my own."
"Looks to be a great book, hopefully my wife will love it as a Christmas gift."

"Before listing the benefits of the content, I want to stress that the book itself appears designed for ease of use in the kitchen. The cover and binding allow the book to lay perfectly flat on the counter while you work and refer from it. AMAZING STANDOUT RECIPES: pg.88 Nectarine Arugula Prosciutto Wraps: the creativity in this flavorful pairing is great for snacks, or if you have to run into a market and grab 3 things. 169 Creamy Celeriac and Leek soup (w BACON): again, makes me not miss potatoes at all. Because of my strictly following this way of eating, I have: --eliminated my chronic 20 migraines a month. --eliminated my Lyme bone and joint pain. --eliminated my Thyroid antibodies. --eliminated my Raynaud's Syndrome. This book makes following the Autoimmune Protocol easier and enjoyable."
"Although autoimmune conditions can affect almost any part of the body, they all have the same thing in common: a confused hyperresponsive immune system. In fact, some studies now clearly show that many autoimmune conditions are associated with a leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) which can explain how certain toxins and incompletely digested food particle can get into your blood and trigger your immune system to attack certain parts of your body. The autoimmune protocol helps correct a leaky gut and tune down the immune system to healthy levels. Autoimmune Protocol = Paleo diet + [elimination of the following foods]. * nightshades (tomato, eggplant, bell pepper, hot pepper, tabasco, paprika, white potatoes, goji). * eggs (all kinds, yolks & whites). * nuts (all nuts like almonds, macadamia, cashews, walnuts and hazelnuts, but COCONUT IS OKAY!). * seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, flax, anise, caraway, cumin, fennugreek, mustard). * alcohol. * NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen…). * artificial sweeteners (including stevia). * thickeners (guar gum, carragenean…). WHAT IS THERE LEFT TO EAT???!?!?! Finally, if that wasn't enough, the cookbook also includes a complete 4-week meal plan and shopping list to make your life easier. This cookbook will not only help me expand my horizons in the kitchen, but it will also simplify the life of many of my clients following a limited diet like the autoimmune protocol."

"I went thru it and highlighted the best-looking recipes with the shortest prep time."
"Then, I realized that the recipe leaves out the quantity of matcha and protein powder that are supposed to be added."
"It explains thing such as: why you crave protein or carbs. why you need both and when. which fats are good, which are bad, and why you need both. which protein takes the longest to burn. what you need to eat before bed if you're hungry. what you need to eat when you first wake up. Basic and simple explanations for what to eat, when and why. The last 3/4s of the book contains recipes for eating getting lean or getting big."
"The recipes are easy to follow and simple to make."
"This book gives great nutritional information and healthy recipes that are easy to make and taste pretty good!"
"Love the recipes and how they is divided into sections of types of food and if they are for getting bigger or leaner."
"You want Michael Matthews' other book, Bigger Leaner Stronger (or if you're a woman, you presumably want his female-geared book Thinner Leaner Stronger, which I of course have not read). It's supposed to be a cookbook that goes along with BLS...but the recipes are pretty much completely useless for that purpose. I bought some other cookbook and Amazon popped this up as a suggestion, and I thought what the heck. It's a scientific, evidence-based method for losing fat and building muscle, which immediately appealed to me. BLS contains both of those things, whereas this book only contains the diet part and in less detail. If you want to change your body and you're willing to work really hard to make it happen, grab Bigger Leaner Stronger. But nobody reads 3 star reviews, and in any case I'm telling you not to buy the book."

"I also don't have a gallbladder to assist in fat assimilation. With cancer, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes on both sides of my family, I really didn't want to make any mistakes. I found all of her information to be extremely well researched, and she consistently provided far more useful and important health information, of a higher value, than even most of the medical doctors who've posted on the same subjects. I have felt fully supported by her advice, including her suggestion of taking Ox Bile and Essential Enzymes to help with fat digestion, for those of us without a gallbladder."
"She explains the ketogenic way of eating very well, provides 3 different paths to take to be successful and it has a ton of recipes."
"I am vegan and have tried to go keto in the past and failed due to lack of information."
"I've been following Leanne Vogel for about a year and purchased a few of her ebooks (which are amazing!). Leanne uses natural foods, tons of vegetables and really promotes sustainable and humane animal products. The most interesting and surprising thing is how she explains that carbs are NECESSARY for long-term health."
"It's very detailed, and almost presents too much information which makes it hard to sort through (for me)."
"I have followed Leanne's blog, videos and podcast and this is an all-in-one resources that puts together in one place all the information that she has been sharing with us. There is no just ONE way to do Keto and she makes sure you know it, listen to your body so you can chose the approach that better suits you."

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars
Originally published in 1997, DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION is a unique resource that covers both adult- and childhood-onset diabetes, explains step-by-step how to normalize blood sugar levels and prevent or reverse complications, and offers detailed guidelines for establishing a treatment plan. Bernstein (Diabetes Type Two, Prentice Hall, 1990), a Type I diabetic, begins his book with testimonials from 14 patients praising his methods for controlling diabetes.

"Using the advice in this book, my weight went from 185lbs to 145lbs within about 6 months and is holding stable - I am 5'6" so I am now at the right weight level. Happy to say, all the advice on Low Carb High Fat diet actually works. Triglycerides should be less than 150). On diagnosis, A1C = 8.3, HDL = 38, LDL = 126, Total Cholesterol = 222, Triglycerides = 288. At 3 month mark (2/16/16), A1C = 6.2, HDL = 41, LDL = 96, Total Cholesterol = 157, Triglycerides = 98. On 8/1/16, A1C = 6.1, HDL = 47, LDL = 103, Total Cholesterol = 170 Triglycerides = 101. 11/28/16, A1C = 5.7, HDL = 40, LDL = 80, total cholesterol = 147, Triglycerides = 137. --------------. Original Review (June 30, 2014). I am a newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic (4 weeks now) and was in denial for the first few days because I exercise strenuously 3x a week (4-6 mile runs) and although I do go over sometimes, mostly I thought I ate healthy. Keeping with his advice, my blood sugar is almost down to normal within 3 weeks of following his advice and my weight is down 15 pounds (he says.. "if you drop weight by simply switching to a low carb diet, consider yourself lucky"..). Also, it was a bit jarring to see him tell me that pure running is worse than weight training. Another point that cemented my belief in this is that my Mom has had diabetes for over 15 years and her blood sugar were pretty high, even fasting... After I read this book, I pushed my mom to follow the same advice and although she is resisting, she is putting some aspects in her diet and her fasting blood sugar has dropped from almost 180 to 108 in about a month. YOU HAVE TO GET OFF of high carbs and as I mentioned that he is at times very intense in what you have to do.. given he has been a Type 1 diabetic since age 12 and he was near organ failure at around 30 and then found and made the VLC (very low carb diet) work for himself, switched careers to Medicine to help others and has lived to 80+ years with perfect A1C and other parameters. Not just that, if you search on the Internet, you will find forums after forums of people who have kept diabetes related complications at Bay by following his advice or similar VLC (very low carb) diet further proving that he is right."
"Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood SugarsDr. He was on 43 units of insulin, he was on Neurontin for the terrific pain from the neuropathy in both his feet. I told my grown children that in 6 months I will be pushing Dad around in a wheelchair and I meant it. He had to put a bath towel on his pillow because of the profuse sweating that would happen when his blood sugar went low while he was sleeping. He fell asleep at the wheel while driving and hit the medium strip on the freeway. I continued to read and study about low carb especially where diabetes was concerned. Dr. Bernstein's book gave us the hope and the information we needed to change my husband's condition. I have now purchased each of the 4 editions of Dr. Bernstein's book, "Diabetes Solution" and each one has given me new information. She said he was her "poster child for diabetics" and if she could get all of her patients to do what he did, she would be a happy doctor. Recently my husband decided to lose more weight and now has lost a total of 100 pounds. Low carb critics have said that this type of diet is much to difficult to sustain long-term. Check out the results of our low carb lifestyle on our web site at [...]. The before and after photos should be enough to convince anyone to pick up Dr. B's book today!! We are passionate advocates of low carb and of telling diabetics the truth about their disease."

Best Cooking for Kids

Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food
And between busy work schedules and the inconvenient truth that kids simply refuse to eat vegetables and other healthy foods, how can average parents ensure their kids are getting the proper nutrition and avoiding bad eating habits? With the help of a prominent nutritionist, her book provides parents with an arsenal of information related to kids' nutrition so parents understand why it's important to throw in a little avocado puree into their quesadillas. As a mother of three, Jessica Seinfeld can speak for all parents who struggle to feed their kids right and deal nightly with dinnertime fiascos. As she wages a personal war against sugars, packaged foods, and other nutritional saboteurs, she offers appetizing alternatives for parents who find themselves succumbing to the fastest and easiest (and least healthy) choices available to them. With the help of a nutritionist and a professional chef, Seinfeld has developed a month's worth of meals for kids of all ages that includes, for example, pureed cauliflower in mac and cheese, and kale in spaghetti and meatballs. She also provides revealing and humorous personal anecdotes, tear–out shopping guides to help parents zoom through the supermarket, and tips on how to deal with the kid that "must have" the latest sugar bomb cereal. By solving problems on a practical level for parents, Seinfeld addresses the big picture issues that surround childhood obesity and its long–term (and ruinous) effects on the body. She discusses the critical importance of portion size, and the specific elements kids simply must have (as opposed to adults) in order to flourish now and in the future: protein, calcium, vitamins, and Omega 3 and 6 fats. Jessica Seinfeld's book is practical, easy–to–read, and a godsend for any parent that wants their kids to be healthy for a long time to come. Bob Greene, author of The Best Life Diet : "I found the techniques for adding vegetables to meals extremely creative and the recipes fantastic! I started with the foods they would eat (chicken nuggets, tacos, macaroni and cheese) and I added a pureed vegetable of the same color. So if your child only eats macaroni and cheese (or noodles and butter), you should add cauliflower or yellow squash puree, which utterly disappears. So my children actually think baking cakes, brownies, and cookies with sweet potatoes, carrots, or beets is the proper way to cook. Amazon.com: I have to ask it, since I know many readers will: do these recipes require a squad of personal chefs to prepare, or can a busy mom or dad without seven years of Seinfeld residuals put them together by themselves? So when I started creating recipes from my pureed veggie experiments, I had three criteria: my kids had to love the food, the preparation had to be quick, and the process had to be simple.

"Love the recipes in this book."
"Purchased for my daughter in law."
"I have learned so much for Danielle from the simple plan and layout about the foods that we buy and eat."

"I live in Portland, the mecca of all things vegan, and my non-vegan friends have been clawing at my door to eat these recipes instead of eating out. I wish they had prep and cook times listed for recipes, but I have to read the recipe and make an educated guess. The food is delicious, the tone is funny, and I have been talking it up to my friends."
"Most of the reviews ive read before purchasing this book are mostly people complaining about the cursing, that they didn't know it was vegan and that the ingredients are too "fancy". UHM, it isn't literally them supporting thugs.. its like a metaphor.. they are thugs in the kitchen, they toughen you up and motivate you in almost a boot camp sort of way. therefore they're they thugs in the kitchen telling you how to get that sh*t right.. Now as for the fancy ingredient complain.. one guy said smoked paprika was too fancy and hard to find... which is not.. at all.. it should be a staple in any cooks spice rack.. Aminos might be hard to find but i seen those even in low level market places and farmers markets or nurserys or co-ops.. health stores, nutritionists or a damn WHOLE FOODS! with all the gmo and crazy processes they're doing lately its surprising people aren't paying attention to minor details like that and then they complain about it like if the author set them up...*sigh*. Now for my honest review; first Id like to say im Hispanic and raised with ethnic foods. I'm trying to establish a routine where the most used items are already cutup and stored somehow for easy access.. perhaps when i do a week food prep. you don't miss the meat at all... i do wish there were more recipes and more versatile breakfast ideas with more fruit but its still a good way to kick-start a detox or life style.. it weans you and really does motivate you if you don't mind the potty mouth. Their sweet potatoes fried rice is also yummy and they have this peanut dipping sauce yum! Some recipes i feel are missing something but maybe thats just my habits and culture that are used to different sides a big slab of meat."
"Love love love this cook book."
"It's worth every penny if you follow a plant based diet, are thinking about following a plant based diet, or just want a fun, delicious cookbook to add variety to you meals. I've been plant based for about one year now, and I don't crave cheese or any animal products, but every now and then I do like to experiment with some old favorites, like lasagna. Really, mad props to all your hard work, it has made my life a whole lot easier and tastier..."
"No reason to throw a cuss word after every word."
"If you are not offended by a little (okay, a lot) of cussing, and you like vegan food, this book is for you!"

Jerusalem: A Cookbook
With five bustling restaurants in London and two stellar cookbooks, Ottolenghi is one of the most respected chefs in the world; in Jerusalem, he and Tamimi have collaborated to produce their most personal cookbook yet. The book’s leisurely pace picks up with the introduction of dishes, some familiar but many not, that include fattoush, latkes, mejadra, clear chicken soup with knaidlach, pan-fried mackerel with golden beetroot and orange salsa, and helbeh (fenugreek cake).
Reviews
"This cookbook is approachable and the recipes are actually something you will make...and then make again. ****Edit****I would just like to say, that one of the reasons, I think, that this is so doable for a Middle Eastern cookbook, is these are the recipes that regular people make."
"We ended up getting it for my father in law for Christmas and I think he read the whole thing cover to cover on Christmas Day."
"This cookbook offers both; the recipes work (I should note I have the UK edition without US conversions)--many of the techniques are new to me and they work well--and the flavors are amazing. The first recipes I made from this book were the roasted cauliflower salad with celery, hazelnuts and pomegranate and the sofrito chicken. I am adding this cookbook to my top 10 list because a) it's a beautiful, well-written book, b) the recipes work very well when followed to the letter, but there's lots of room for improvisation, c) the flavor and texture combinations are complex, subtle and well-balanced, and d) the dishes are delicious."
"Bought this book for my sister's birthday and my husband had me order one for him to take to work."
"The recipes are well described so you can successfully create a great diverse table full of beautiful plated food."
"I have it both as a book and on Kindle -- I usually don't buy cookbooks like this one on Kindle because I love the real book -- but I knew I would want to show off some of these recipes when I am visiting family and friends so I have them portable, too."
"Such a wonderful cookbook!"

The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet
Written by Robb Wolf, a research biochemist who traded in his lab coat and pocket protector for a whistle and a stopwatch to become one of the most sought after strength and conditioning coaches in the world. Asserting that "modern life causes diabetes, autoimmunity, cancer, neurodegeneration, and infertility," the first-time author Wolf, a former student of The Paleo Diet's Lauren Cordain, takes on grains, carbs, vegetarians, misinformation, and other aspects of modern life with a casual, conversational tone ("Keep your poop where it belongs") that makes even topics like the components of total cholesterol engaging.
Reviews
"This book takes the low carb approach made popular by Dr.Atkins and perfects it. I originally started on Atkins and eventually changed my diet according to what I always thought was common sense - For example - While staying under 30 carbs a day I added 2 servings of fruit, ate lots of fatty fish (only wild caught), eliminated processed meats (e.g.: bacon, cold cuts) and replaced them with GRASS FED, naturally raised meats while restricting my calories. Add in some interval workouts, get plenty of sleep, try not to get too stressed and BAM - the weight comes off! He cites both anthropological and biochemical evidence to support the plan in an easy to understand, fun read. Yes, even SATURATED fat, as long as it is from a natural source - no GMO's or anything processed. This will reduce chronic inflammation in your body, which is the root cause of most autoimmune diseases today and a major factor on poor health and weight gain (as explained very clearly in Robb's book). Reducing carbs will also help restore your body's sensitivity to both insulin and leptin, two key hormones tied to energy storage and utilization. You need to "RESET" your leptin receptors so that your brain starts listening to the "Stop eating" signal. You can find more information on this by looking into Dr. Jack Kruse, the neurosurgeon who is pioneering the notion that increasing leptin sensitivity is the key to weight loss. It is universally accepted that eating breakfast is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, why not make it a big one that keeps you going throughout the day. Beef should be grass fed, eggs should be free range, and fish should be wild caught. Omega 3 fish oil has been PROVEN to transform the small, high density form of LDL cholesterol (which damages your arteries) to the soft fluffy (safe) variety of LDL. You would have to swallow ten of those softgels to get the same amount of omega three found in ONE can of cold water sardines! Also note: Omega 3 oil is one of the best things you can put into your body to reduce chronic inflammation. Besides, if you are eating protein and fat, you won't be nearly as hungry and this restriction will happen naturally. Alcohol will postpone fat loss while it is being processed by your body, plus it can cause a spike in insulin which will give you hunger cravings. Personally for me, alcohol is the trigger that makes me run for the pizza and wings. You will find that you will feel very different after a drink once you start eating low carb anyway - the effect won't be as pleasant. Do this for a few weeks and then try a diet soda and you'll see how awful that fake stuff really tastes. Your hormones will balance out, your leptin sensitivity will return, your stress will be reduced and you will feel better and lose weight faster if you get enough QUALITY, uninterrupted sleep. I always knew this theory of "Eating 6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism from slowing down" was bull. Warm up with a little cardio, and switch to body-weight or weight bearing exercises. This is a great idea - you will sleep more soundly if your body isn't working hard to digest dinner. Years ago, I sucked on two packs of Newports a day and was able to quit. Make no mistake, refined carbohydrates are insidious and will kill you just as surely as smoking will - probably faster. This body equates this stress to fear of starvation, and reacts by retaining as much energy (calories) as possible. My recommendation: Take up a hobby at the same time you begin restricting carbs. Fill your spare time doing something you enjoy and distract your sub conscience from what it is being denied."
"If you are one of the people like me who grew up believing in the "science" we were taught and need to understand why what we have always been taught is the "pseudo science" this book is for you."
"I love the author because he's down to Earth and his stuff just makes sense. I started eating a Paleo lifestyle while I was reading because I was so excited to experience the benefits that were promised. If you do, then you can continue to experience the benefits that you have gained."
"His book is thought-provoking, presents an interesting theory about what we should eat!"
"This book promotes an interesting theory. While I don't think the eating plan is for everyone, the exercise plan makes total sense. (We're all in our 60's). In an effort to make a very dull subject interesting, the writer attempts humor in a flippant manner. As with all diet and exercise recommendations from a book, read it and use your own good sense and your doctors advice on whether or not to follow the program being recommended."

"What is really motivating me is the fact that I lost 15 pounds and 10 overall inches in two weeks. I just wanted to let you guys know that there is a lot of cooking involved with this program. I'm actually tired of cooking, which is why I started making large meals to freeze for the week. I has been approximately four days since my previous review and I lost an additional 2 pounds on this journey. Update: So I just finished Day 23 of my Whole30 Journey and I feel good, aside from the fact that I caught a cold. I then measured myself and noted that I lost a total of 31.5 inches (-5" from chest, -2" from right arm, -3.5" from left arm, -8" from waist, -5" from hips, -4" from right thigh, and -4" from left thigh). I plan to have a celebratory dinner tonight (likely a gluten free pizza from papa Murphy's), then I will start my second round of whole30 tomorrow."
"i lost so much weight on this diet, did it for like a year."
"(Confession: I used to work out everyday but once I started the program I didn't have enough time to exercise so no, I didn't reach these results from hitting the gym; it's all about food.). You should give the program 100% effort and if you are too stressed, busy, or just don't have the time to make all of this homemade food you will probably get discouraged and fall off track."
"As one girl whined and moaned about not being able to chew gum, I naturally took that as a challenge and thought: I'll do this Whole30 and not be such a baby about it. I gained confidence, learned that I do have the ability to say "no" to food cravings, discovered a myriad of new recipes, cured all of my PCOS symptoms (regular menstrual cycles for the first time in ten years and no cysts), and as a bonus, dropped 2 pants sizes. As a child, I was in and out of the hospital with stomach pains and problems (I'll spare all the details) and after following Melissa & Dallas' Whole30, I ate sans stomach aches for the first time EVER. For my entire life eating a meal meant some level of pain/discomfort while my food digested. (Confession: I did, in fact, walk back and forth from my kitchen to my coffee table while I cooked tonight because I didn't want to risk getting food on the new pages. (If all else fails, you'll have a stunning book on display to let all your guests see how "healthy" you are.)."

"Had my blood work done Sept, 2013, results as followed: Total Cholesterol-231. HDL-78. LDL-131. Triglycerides-108. Read the book, made a list of the 10 guidelines, taped it to the wall near the kitchen sink, tweaked it to my liking. Took 2 tabs of Cholest-off daily (phytosterols). Took 2 tabs of organic Flaxseed oil daily. Ate almonds or an apple (or both) as a snack sometime during the day. Ate more spinach and mushrooms and garlic and veggies,(beets and cabbage clean the system). Ate more beans (not so great with that). Ate much less meat and dairy (which I had previously done, with little positive results). Drank a soy latte or some kind of soy shake (non GMO)..delicious!!! For the life of me, could not tolerate the psyllium husk. Continued to exercise, (either walk or zumba or pilates) about 3 times a week. Just received my new lab results, drawn March 2014 (6 months later), as followed: Total Cholesterol-186. HDL-78. LDL-94. Triglycerides-69. My 60th birthday is in 2 months."
"I had just turned 60 so I will admit that I was skeptical that it was possible to erase with any plan years of unhealthy eating, weight gain, lack of exercise and family history of heart disease. The recommended foods, like apples, almonds, beans, etc and supplements were easy to add to my daily life. Lunch was a large delicious apple and almonds. Dinner always included a large salad loaded with fresh vegetables, blueberries, strawberries, garbanzo beans, walnuts, almonds, and a drizzle of light balsamic vinaigrette. I began adding the supplements, especially the fiber, slowly as recommended by the author and drank lots of water, so I had no problems tolerating any recommended supplements. I was not able to find any of the plant stenol juice or milk that the author recommended-they are discontinued by Smart Balance and Minute Maid-so I relied solely on Benacol for all plant stenol additions."
"I was shocked to learn that I had dropped to 184 total Cholesterol...My doctor asked me what I did and I told him about this book."

The Everyday DASH Diet Cookbook: Over 150 Fresh and Delicious Recipes to Speed Weight Loss, Lower Blood Pressure, and Prevent Diabetes (A DASH Diet Book)
THE DASH DIET IS HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS. A healthy diet is only as good as the food it provides in its plan. "The research-based DASH diet emphasizes "real foods" and minimizes processed [foods]; with veteran cookbook author Rodgers, leading DASH expert Heller offers easy recipes (e.g., crunchy broccoli slaw, rosemary pork chops with balsamic glaze) for readers living a healthy lifestyle. VERDICT These easy, conventional recipes will interest home cooks looking for healthy meal ideas."
Reviews
"The recipes are thoughtfully presented in an easy-to-follow format, and the book opens with a nice section on cooking using the DASH Diet princples and what items one should have on hand when cooking the DASH way."
"This is a good basic cook book for people trying to eat healthy and lower blood pressure."
"So far I made one or two recipes from this book but all of them are pretty tasty."
"I think the DASH concept is more geared toward people without complex dietary needs and who want to drastically change how they eat to lose weight (I need to lose 16 pounds to be in BMI of 21; I recently lost 15lb on Weight Watchers). However, my diet is Gluten-free and mainly vegetarian but still eat fish and eggs -- no meat or poultry and no fast food, but I was consuming too much sugar, peanut butter & cheese which has a lot of sodium :(. So I am doing yoga every day to reduce anxiety and exercise bike to lose more weight. I am incorporating the Dash concept by adding a lot more fruit and more vegetables at each meal before I usually ate 1-2. I do not eat meat or poultry and there are two huge sections devoted to that; some recipes called for chicken broth which is horrible; has a lot of sodium."
"I found most of the recipes mundane in nature and lacking in flavor although easy enough to prepare."

"These easy-to-assemble dishes keep both family mealtime planning and healthy eating in mind with kid-friendly, 'simplified and skinny-fied' dishes.

"At the time I bought this, I'd heard nothing about it. So many of us are on special diets or have to entertain for a family member or guest who is and pull something together--whether that be gluten-free, vegetarian, something for a family who works during the day and needs crockpot meals, something for a family who works all the time and only wants to cook on weekends and then freeze the meals... this book took that all into account. That took some time, but boy is it handy, even if you yourself only use it occassionally. I have had a few cookbooks that actually made me turned off to the meal due to the grey lighting or even ones I knew were fake like a slow cooker photo of mac and cheese that showed it browned on top (that does not occur in a slow cooker). These are truly restaurant quality meals, that are obviously tested and tried and perfected. Some authors will not do this unless the company pays them to use their name in the book. Examples: TUSCAN PANZANELLA SALAD WITH GRILLED GARLIC BREAD. SUMMER LOBSTER ROLLS. MONGOLIAN BEEF AND BROCCOLI. FRENCH BREAD PIZZA SUPREME. TERIYAKI GLAZED STUFFED PORK CHOPS WITH PINEAPPLE SALSA. ROAST BEEF SANDWICHES WITH CREAMY HORSERADISH SPREAD. CHICKPEA AND POTATO CURRY. SPICY BLACKBEAN BURGERS WITH CHIPOTLE MAYO. PEAR AND BRIE GRILLED CHEESE. STEAK SANDWICHES. BLACK BEAN BURRITO BOWLS. CILANTRO LIME SHRIMP. CHEESY BAKED PANNE WITH EGGPLANT. SILKY CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE. LOADED NACHO POTATO SKINS. ITALIAN SAUSAGE WITH PEPPERS AND ONION. WARM APPLE PIE CRUMBLE. GUMBOS, STIR FRIES, MAIN DISH SALADS, MEATLESS MAIN DISH CHAPTERS. SHRIMP AND GRITS. COCONUT PANNA COTTA WITH RASPBERRIES. DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHUNK WALNUT COOKIES. WINTER POTATO, KALE AND SAUSAGE FRITTATA. THAI COCONUT MUSSELS. C ROLLATINI STUFFED WITH ZUCCHINI AND MUSHROOMS. LASAGNA (ZUCCHINI STRIPS ARE USED RATHER THAN PASTA AND I SWEAR YOU WON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!). Whether you never eat red meat, eat only white meat, eat only seafood, eat no animal protein...or switch it up all the time, you can easily find a chapter on whatever suits your fancy or your mood that day."
"This book cooks with great ingredients which makes the meals taste really good while if you follow the portion sizes, you will lose weight."
"This book has great healthier versions of the foods you already love, and some you'll learn to love."
"This book has A LOT of great recipes and simple ingredients that you would mostly or should mostly have in your kitchen anyway."
"I first fell in love with Gina's recipes on her blog, so when I saw this book I knew I had to have it."
"I have loved each and every recipe I've made from this book and they are all sure to become staples."
"I've long enjoyed the author's blog so when the book was released it quickly became one of my go to gifts for Christmas 2014. For me it was worth gifting to friends because the book has a good range of recipes that taste more indulgent than they actually are and that consistently work."
"I think cookbooks are a waste of money since you can find any recipe you need online, but I wanted tasty low calorie recipes without having to scroll though hundreds of recipes online."

"This is the cookbook I pick up first."
"This book covers the ground of every other vegetarian cookbook, which means that my shelves are being cleared of all but 3 cookbooks, and those dozens of time and money wasting vegetarian cookbooks are on their way to Goodwill."
"I can follow a recipe and creatively make things taste good--but it's not a passion. I love that this book gives you many alternatives and suggestions for "in general" recipes."
"Massive cooking tome that's perfect for all kinds of staple food recipes."
"I'm an experienced home cook, but finally had enough of cooking the same things again and again. After borrowing Joy of Cooking, Better Homes & Gardens, Betty Crocker, Fannie Farmer, Cook's Illustrated and Good Housekeeping from the library, I narrowed it down to this book and Joy. Then I added straight technique books like The Science of Good Cooking, 12 Recipes, On Food and Cooking and even How To Cook Everything Fast. What makes this design so nice is that when I know I want to cook some boneless chicken breasts, but want something different, it's easy to gain inspiration by going to that section of the Poultry chapter and checking out the many ways to season, marinate, sauce and cook them. A seasoned cook can look at the ingredients and know how many it will feed and can easily scale it, but for new cooks, not so much. He also includes an index of menus, and charts of the 102 Essential Recipes, his top 100 fast recipes (out of 453 that are 30 min or less), top 100 make-ahead and top 100 vegetarian recipes. Whether you're just learning to cook or are have been cooking for many years and want to expand your repertoire, this is an excellent cookbook, a welcome addition to the pantheon of well-regarded reference cookbooks."

"There is sure to be one to match your mood, the weather, crock pot size, ingredients available, occasion, hair color you name it, haha. Nothing more inconvenient than using a can of green beans as a page weight while trying to hold your cookbook open. If one doesn't turn out how I like there is plenty more to choose from :) I think its very well organized and so happy I finally bought this book. The only tiny issue for me is I wish there were a couple pages at the end of the book for "NOTES" so that I could write down my favorite recipes."
