Best Headaches

Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program. -- Howard Kirshner, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Neurology, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Find Best Price at Amazon"In the last five years, I have tried almost everything - traditional neurology treatments, acupuncture, cranial sacral massage, meditation, yoga, chiropractic, and even Botox. Most things would work for a short period of time (a few days to a few months, in the case of Botox, acupuncture, and chiropractic). In a moment of frustration, I put up a post on Facebook about how tired I was of these headaches interfering with my life; a friend responded with a link to this book. I started reading this book at home on a Saturday night of a week of bad headaches. I finally felt like someone out there believed what kind of pain I was in, in addition to 'odd' symptoms I was having (balance problems, inability to concentrate, bizarre feelings like my left arm was not part of my body, etc.). Once you start feeling relief, you realize following the diet is not much of a price to pay for getting your life back. Also, I have stopped feeling angry at my body and at the world for this suffering I've gone through - which is a big stress relief in itself."
"I purchased the 123 heal your headache book after years of terrible daily migraine pain. I followed the book as well as I could; the diet part is rather difficult and apparently I have no self control when it comes to food. I started feeling the same way and started eating what I wanted although the MSG part of the diet had become second nature, I am an avid label reader anyway. I am still on some medications to help prevent migraines and I am still VERY sesitive, but I am NOT suffering like I had been before reading this book."
"i purchased this book for my girlfriend who constantly gets headaches from multiple things, and they would happen at least 2-3 times a week."
"This book was very good - anyone with chronic migraines/headaches should read."
"I eagely read Heal Your Headache, as it had helped a friend deal with her migraine headaches.I was exasperated with doctors simply prescribing drugs and not addressing the root causes of my migraine headaches."

Best Heart Disease

The New York Times bestselling guide to the lifesaving diet that can both prevent and help reverse the effects of heart disease Based on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Prevent. and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. Caldwell Esselstyn has directed pioneering research demonstrating that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can often be reversed by making comprehensive change in diet and lifestyle.“. —Dean Ornish, M.D, founder, president and director of Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. His focus on the healing powers of proper nutrition on diseased coronary arteries has now proven right, raising another unthinkable notion—that heart patients can cure themselves.”. —Bernadine Healy, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health. “A hard nosed scientist shows us his secrets for successfully cleaning the rusting arteries of so many patients - and it doesn't even hurt.”. —Mehmet Oz, M.D., coauthor, You: The Owner’s Manual. Based on decades of research, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has shown not only how to prevent heart disease, but how to reverse it-even for people who have been affected for many years. Half of all Americans dying today could have changed their date with the undertaker by following Dr. Esselstyn’s plan.”. —Howard F. Lyman, author of No More Bull! Esselstyn's eminently successful arrest-and-reversal therapy for heart disease through patient education and empowerment as the treatment of choice will send shock waves through a mercenary medical system that focuses largely on pills and procedures.”. —Hans Diehl, Founder & Director of the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP).

"I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house. 45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!"
"Using the information in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I now eat a plant-based diet, which I've been on for a couple of months now. My rule of thumb is this: If it had a mother and a father (beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Since I've been eating plant-based foods only -- and there's a LOT to choose from -- my blood pressure has dropped, I've lost about 14 pounds, I sleep far more soundly, my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, etc. UPDATE: I've now lost 20 pounds, and another blood draw revealed that my cholesterol level has dropped 30 points."
"More people should read it before they find themselves needing to go to the doctor."
"Extreme diet for those with heart disease, can be followed rigorously by those who want to prevent heart disease (in my opinion)."
"My husband picked this book up while in the doctors office and began to read it, when we got home he ask if I would order him a copy."
"Great book and great recipes."

"In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story."
"This decisive, detailed, superbly written history of the HeLa cells that have played such a highly significant role in many arenas of medical research delves deeply into both the scientific and personal stories of Henrietta Lacks and her family."
"A legacy, kept hidden for over 20+ years from Henrietta Lack's family and those of us,who are not privy to the inner circles of the medical and science community."
"Skloot did a terrific job spending years gathering information from the family and researching scientific discoveries related to the cells."
"Incredible true story of a woman's legacy, from the usage of her DNA without consent, to the medical miracles her stolen contribution made, to the injustices her family faced decades later."

Find Best Price at Amazon"About a year ago I had a doctor insist that I needed to go back to PT with the purpose of developing and implementing a full-body strengthening program. I begrudgingly went because he wouldn't drop it and lucked into seeing someone who understands connective tissue disorders and how to go about treating them. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to work on a full body preventative strengthening program because we have been dealing with multiple injuries. Negative: * The author makes it clear in his introduction that you are to use this book with a physical therapist. * He is also adamant that you need to follow the protocol of progression of exercises exactly, without skipping around to address things that hurt NOW (chronic injuries). On some level I understand this reasoning because dealing with a long string of chronic and new injuries is what has prevented me from figuring out a whole body program with my PT. As a patient, I think there needs to be a balance between keeping the chronic injuries under control and working on the preventative. To reach more people the author went through and also included a translation into normal person speak. In addition to the quality of the pictures, the model is wearing a baggy shirt and shorts that obscures his knees and elbows. * He states that you need to have a geneticist diagnose hypermobile EDS and then after the diagnosis you start the protocol and assemble your team. Those specialists did things and gave me information that immediately improved my quality of life. He gives instructions to the physical therapist on how they need to modify massage and mobilization techniques to avoid accidentally injuring you. I am going to have my PT double check my form on the exercises before I start doing them at home and I do plan to work through the protocol as it is written."

"I didn’t really understand the beginning of the HIV/AIDS crisis since I was too young."
"This book gives the story of the start of the aids epidemic and the missteps and prejudices by doctors, government, and media that led to this problem."
"The story successfully blends a number of elements: competitive jealousies within the scientific community (it's likely that the French actually discovered the AIDS virus, despite a neck-in-neck US researcher who claimed the glory), the politics of the slow-moving National Institutes of Health (NIH), Reagan's stubborn refusal to address the AIDS issue (he finally did so six years after the epidemic began--and after 20,850 citizens had died), and a number of incredibly touching stories of people with the disease. One thing I hadn't known was the schism within the gay community: some people recognizing the reality of the threat while others (understandably) discounted it as internalized homophobia or as a homophobic attempt at sexual repression. This book captures a period in time where, in the midst of sometimes slow-moving science, second-class-citizen politics, and a seemingly indifferent larger society, some dedicated people struggled to raise awareness, to change habits, and others, to face death with equanimity."
"The "Butcher's Bill," the tally of deaths to AIDS, is a steady drumbeat in each chapter as LGBT activists on the ground race to care for the dying as bureaucracy hampers research and recognition for the virus."

Lastly, I enjoy her writing tone which makes it easier to read and take in all the health info. Other things that I appreciate in this book- Tia Tips and a look into common health topics like GMOs, dairy and calcium, iodine in table salt. Now, I haven't tried any recipes yet and I will be updating my review after I do, but they all look good, healthy and I hope they are tasty."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I saw three endocrinologists, three GPs, two neurologists, numerous chiropractors and massage therapists, two acupuncturists, and even a life coach and hypnotist (pretty much any health related professional whose bio suggested they might be able to help). This book introduced me to two concepts that were critical: Functional medicine, and Hashimoto's Gluten sensitivity. This led to several significant changes. The second came when I started looking for functional medicine doctors in Austin, TX and following the supplementation suggestions put forward in this book. Empty Stomach (AM): - Licorice drops. - Probiotic. - Saccharomyces Boulardii. Lunch: - Glutamine. - Methyl B12 (my Dr suspects a MTHFR gene mutation; regular B12 wasn't helping but this works great). - NAC. - Zinc (this was huge for me; gave me lots more energy). - Selenium. Bedtime: - Magnesium. - CoQ10. - Probiotic. - Fish Oil w/vitamin D. Many of these don't have to be taken with food and the order could be switched up. I'd recommend chatting with your doctor about lab work for vitamin deficiencies and reading Dr. Wentz's supplement guide."
"I've read the Stop The Thyroid Madness site, Mary Shamon's thyroid-info website, Dr. Alexander Haskell's book, Dr. Datiz Kharrazian's book and his diet recommendations, read what Jack Kruse has to say... I've looked into the GAPS diet, the paleo diet, the autoimmune paleo diet, and researched intestinal permeability and how to heal it. I'm so thrilled to have this book, it still seems too good to be true! :). I would suggest though, if there is ever a second printing, and an updated version, that the author include more advice/info on finding a good functional/integrative/holistic Dr. to work with, which testing is available and from which labs, how to navigate testing solo or with your Dr., etc."
"My antibodies went from 1200 + down to under 100 since then and I'm taking lower and lower doses of my compounded meds and cytomel."

I read the online preview and started the diet protocol while waiting for the book to arrive. For the first week my energy was very low but now it is better than ever, staying level throughout the day to the point that I have cut out caffeine as well and feel no need for it."
"I did not do any hydrotherapy or home enemas, but I did a 2-day apple cleanse, cut out all sugar, white flour, nightshades and coffee, and began a regime of Slippery Elm Bark tea in the mornings and lemon water throughout the day. Since then, I have stayed 100% off nightshades but have reintroduced very limited quantities of white flour, sugar and decaf black coffee. A couple notes: ** I found sea salt baths to be helpful as my body healed itself. ** I used a topical prescription treatment to help speed things along (Clobex spray), but I plan to stop using it in the next week or so as I get closer to 100% clear. ** I found Burt's Bees Miracle Salve to be a great product for my nipples. I have since switched to the adult version of Burt's Bees Shampoo and think the gentle formula has been a welcome change for my scalp as it heals. I couldn't commit to the whole list due to personal preference and breastfeeding, but I have been taking 1000mg Flaxseed Oil, 200mg Milk Thistle, a pre/post-natal multi-vitamin (contains Zinc and Vitamin A), and 100mg Colace (stool softener). Pizza has been hard to give up, but when your skin clears up like mine did, you won't feel too bad about missing out on a slice."
"I just started the program, the book has one thing that is worth the effort and the money, and that is HOPE & FAITH that the plan works based on so many of the testimonials."
"I continue to look for books that can do the same justice for those who suffer with psoriasis and there are just no equals to Dr. Pagano's book "Healing Psoriasis"."
"I don't think diet has 100% to do with psoriasis, but it does make it about 75% better if I adhere to it."
"Dr John Pagano's "Healing Psoriasis.." book is a godsend for those suffering with psoriasis and are sick of dealing with an endless cycle of expensive medications. But I suggest jumping off the medication rollercoaster, read Pagano's book and heal yourself naturally."
