Reviews
"Great thought provoking book for individual or group study."
"In this book he talks about the lost sons."
"I loved this book."
"The way he shed new light on this parable makes it an enjoyable read for anyone, no matter where you are in your walk with God. I'm very left brained and a very linear thinking (this plus this equals this), so the way he broke everything down and showed the symbolism was very eye opening."
"The book focuses on the the character failings of the older brother which are self righteous and greed as well as the obvious sins of the younger brother."
"Though it is a short book, it took me a week to read it as each chapter was so thoughtfully writing and amazing."
"If you grew up in a legalistic rule-producing church you need to read this!!!"
"We have, no doubt, all heard in many sermons that the father represents God and the younger or "prodigal" son refers those whom rebel, are disobedient and lead sinful lives. After the younger son has run out of money and realizes his error, he seeks his father's forgiveness which he readily receives. He spent what he had to become human, and by temporarily separating from God, the Father, and by his death on the cross paid the ultimate sacrifice to save man-kind from our sins."

Jesus: A Pilgrimage
James Martin, SJ, gifted storyteller, editor at large of America magazine, popular media commentator, and New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything , brings the Gospels to life in Jesus: A Pilgrimage , and invites believers and seekers alike to experience Jesus through Scripture, prayer and travel. He has a knack for giving a new perspective to the familiar, making the reader exclaim, ‘Ah, yes!’ A superb gift.” ( Archbishop Desmond Tutu ). Martin has produced a remarkable combination of modern scholarship on the Gospels, his experiences on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, his own creative imagination and sense of humor, and wise advice pertaining to Christian life.” ( Daniel J. Harrington, S.J. Throughout, vivid details of his search in blistering heat for holy sites both authentic and dubious anchor this complex, compelling spiritual testimony.” ( Publishers Weekly, Starred Review). Martin helps answer that question through an insightful, balanced, intelligent, widely-embracing, and faith-filled account of his own journey in search of Jesus. New Testament scholarship opens up the life of Jesus so that the Gospels can speak to each of us personally and transform us as they did their first hearers.” ( John W. Martens, PhD , Associate Professor of Theology, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota). Learned yet highly accessible, he weaves together a number of insights gleaned from the Gospels, a recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Ignatian spirituality, and his personal and pastoral experience.
Reviews
"I point this out because, I generally go in with preconceived notions of what I expect or want from a book. This book, however, is a look at Jesus, as we see Him in the Gospels, through the viewpoint of Fr. If we keep this in mind when reading the book, we can give it a proper review. "None of us is going to be preaching and performing miracles - at least not as Jesus did - but all of us live everyday lives, as Jesus did in Nazareth, being taught and cared for by our parents, loving and squabbling with our families, playing with our friends, learning what it means to be an adult, and in time earning a living." There were, however, parts of this book that I didn't enjoy. I also got bored in the beginning reading about the trek to get to each of their destinations, and would think to myself, "Hurry up and get there." Those complaints aside, I still enjoyed the book. This book was provided to me for free by Harper Collins in exchange for an honest review."
"I bought the book before my trip to Jerusalem."
"The book has three parts to each chapter: the travel story, the explanation of scripture which goes with each place in the life of Jesus, and Father Martin's own experiences as a spiritual director and at retreats."
"While I did not always agree with Fr."
"Martin uses this travelogue of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land (specifically to places named in the Gospels), as an opportunity for meditation. Martin very briefly teaches the Jesuit method of meditation, then provides abundant opportunities for the reader to join him on the journey through the soul; to be present in the beautifully described places, and to move into their deeper meanings."
"I also appreciated his use of the original Greek words and phrases and his deeper translation of the words which truly gave deeper understanding to the exegesis of the author's intent."
"This is not a highly philosophical even a cutting edge theological treatise .Rather a journey to discover Christ in his element and how he changed the world that has 2billion plus followers."

Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes: Cultural Studies in the Gospels
Beginning with Jesus' birth, Ken Bailey leads you on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus throughout the four Gospels. "A brilliant addition to Bailey's other works in which he sheds light on the biblical text from Middle Eastern culture." He draws upon the works of others, ancient and modern, allowing students of scripture to gain an additional layer of insight from the texts he examines. While one could enjoy reading the book straight through, it has the wealth of information that may also be accessed through use as a resource for examining any of the treated Gospel texts." Laid out in simple format for easy absorption by readers, the author's explanations of his findings require no formal training to follow and understand them. "Bailey has a gift of clear, lively expression; he takes advantage of his personal experiences, interest in Hebrew poetic structure, and knowledge of Arabic to bring insights into NT interpretation." "A rich and fascinating anthology of exegetical essays reflecting on gospel texts through the lens of Middle Eastern culture and rhetoric. Another valuable contribution of this book is the introduction to, and interaction with, great Eastern commentaries long forgotten or largely unknown to Western Biblical Scholarship.

"As he points out the culture resists change, so that listening and watching today through Bailey's accounts of culture and custom give great insight into today's ME world."
"Helped me put the life of Jesus in perspective and gave me a lot to think about."
"Gave it to a Bible Study friend who spends a lot of volunteer time trying to be a Christian witness to interested Afghanistan Muslims."
"In Western theological discussions around Jesus and gospels the contextual setting has been defined more by a helenistic scientific approach where reason and explanation are imposed upon a middle eastern culture."
"It brings the Bible to real life to understand the culture in which the Bible was written."
"I think "Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes" should be must reading for every Junior High Christian Education in schools, churches, and family teaching."
