"If you're a student of conflict, love true-to-life combat stories, are politically aware or conscious of the issues that affect the sons & daughters we send to war, or if you're just a proud American, then this book is for you."
"I'm glad the truth is out, this book tells everything that happened on FOB Airborne. The book so far has been very well written, can't wait to continue reading."
"I know Tommy Scott and Rodger Hill truly care for their men, and their men love them!! So he took me to Tommy Scott's house."
"The fact - seen all too frequently - that we rely on locals with an entirely different culture of truth and integrity for help on the bases? In Erik Prince's book about Blackwater he made it clear- the US military couldn't function without them, nor could it without contractors on the ground. I've read thousands of pages of WWII history and never heard anything that suggested that the platoons would take a day off for mourn and have a funeral. It is wonderful that our culture celebrates the loss of 2 men so thoroughly, but I never heard of anything like that in WWII when thousands were being killed a day. Sure, there were truces so that the sides could fetch their dead, but i think it was culturally inconceivable that they'd stop the battle of Monte Cassino or Kasserine to have a funeral. In Atkinson's trilogy there was a very offhand story about a group of americans celebrating, I believe, a push up into France or Italy by getting drunk, and the general, and damned if I can remember his name - I think he was from Vermont or Delaware - ordered them executed. In addition, this entire thing about hearts and minds, putting americans on these far flung bases to deal with taliban and treacherous locals, without adequate supplies, with joystick jockeys back in North CArolina countermanding their decisions, just doesn't work. Get 'em out, put 'em to work here guarding our borders, and redirect the resources we're wasting to clear up the Islamofascist fifth column and its useful idiots (the media) here."
"This is AWESOME!"
"The Warrior who craves to honorably lead his soldiers into the fray with all intentions of completing the mission and bringing all his men home, is becoming a relic and increasingly at risk with the politicization of the military and the rise of political elites."
"In the risk adverse environment of the military, independent thinking is ripe to second guessing and arm chair quarterbacks sitting inside the wire--or even worse, the beltway of Washington."

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History
In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture. Robert also coproduced the related documentary film, The Rape of Europa , and cowrote Rescuing Da Vinci, a photographic history of an art heist of epic proportions and the Allied rescue effort.
Reviews
"The book pretty much ensures that a reader will both understand the logistical difficulties (no actual unit, no access to transportation, constantly having to ask other military personnel for help), the danger (booby-trapped caches of loot, dank salt mines filled with art and explosives, German soldier ambush), and the heroic nature of the Monument Men's job (especially those who worked in Germany and had to reconcile risk to life and limb to save cultural heritage sites like Aachen Cathedral after touring devastating places like Dachau). I particularly enjoyed learning about Lincoln Kirstein (my name doppelganger) who I thought mostly of as a ballet guy, but who turned out to be more of a Renaissance man in his abilities and proclivities than I had understood."
"And thereafter during the war, it was their responsibility to locate the five million movable works and cultural artifacts that were stolen by the Nazis, which included works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Jan Vermeer, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and Donatello and the pieces that were the highlight of Edsel’s book, the Ghent Altar pieces, Bayeaux Tapestry, and painting of Mother and Child. And their training such as Stout’s focused on understanding raw materials, degradation and cause of deterioration, and preparation to prevent deterioration and damage, which would be beneficial once he delved in the race against time to save the artworks. For the Kindle edition, maps may have been helpful and the photographs may have been dispersed within each chapter rather than at the end of the book."
"My major criticism of this book, and the reason why I could not award the fifth star, is the actual writing, both on the sentence level and the paragraph level, even the chapter arrangements. As a retired Professor of English I was frequently reaching for my non-existent red pen (I read the book on Kindle) to make the sentence-level writing clearer, and also frequently looking back to earlier paragraphs to check on dates and events because the chronology had become confusing."

Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (Penguin Classics)
The controversial journalistic analysis of the mentality that fostered the Holocaust, from the author of The Origins of Totalitarianism Sparking a flurry of heated debate, Hannah Arendt’s authoritative and stunning report on the trial of German Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann first appeared as a series of articles in The New Yorker in 1963. While covering the technical aspects of the trial, Arendt also explored the wider themes inherent in the trial, such as the nature of justice, the behavior of the Jewish leadership during the Nazi Régime, and, most controversially, the nature of Evil itself. Far from being evil incarnate, as the prosecution painted Eichmann, Arendt maintains that he was an average man, a petty bureaucrat interested only in furthering his career, and the evil he did came from the seductive power of the totalitarian state and an unthinking adherence to the Nazi cause.
Reviews
"The book tells the story of Adolph EIchmann's trial in Jersusalem for crimes committed in the Holocaust during WWII. Colonel in a huge bureaucracy, buried deep down in the organizational chart. It walks you through how it started as mercy killings due to low quality of life to a very large complex state owned machine. Through this line you learn that Eichmann was the person who made the whole system run. It was their local government which choose the names and Jews at gunpoint which guided them to the chambers in many camps. Their succession of lies to the Jews about a better tomorrow was a critical fuel that made the system run. It brought out the horror of the system out of the shadows to see it was more than a mix of personal stories but it was a state sanctioned machine. He moved up the SS chain quickly through hard work and taking full advantage of opportunities as they came. He probably would have moved to the top of any bureaucracy, Walmart, Exon, Ford, as he did with the SS. The only difference was then the mission was the Holocaust vs. selling odds and ends at Walmart. You can see how this principle of career success alone, outside of morals turns people into monsters."
"She brings before our consciousness what is still unaddressed as the "justice" of national crimes, the "right " to war."
"Arendt's account of Eichmann's trial is primarily a work of journalism, informed by the writer's deep understanding of philosophy and jurisprudence."
"Several chapters break down the expulsion and transportation of Europe's Jews country by country, in a solid and large effort of research that reminds a reader that detail and difference are always important to understanding."
"Of all the books that I have read dealing with WWII, I had never read or suspected the role that the Jewish leadership played in cooperating with the Nazis."
"Great book... filled with info that even a jaded reader of this period will find surprising."
"In addition to showing how ordinary human beings can be capable of committing such horrific acts, Ms. Arendt provides sort of a timeline that clears up a lot of misconceptions about the Holocaust by accurately describing the events that lead up to the deportations of Jews from various Nazi occupied and allied countries."
"So many other books, such as Bel Canto and What it Takes, are important to me, but none that is as personally transformative as the Arendt, Ortega, Fanon, and Hemingway books."

Reviews
"The planets are talked about in order from the sun after that – Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, all with short and sweet facts about the planet. My daughter in first grade could easily read this book by herself, and both kids were very interested in the short facts and pictures included in this book."
"Upon exploring the book, we found the book to be very visually appealing. If you are looking for a book about the solar system which holds a child's interest and brings this aspect of physical science to life, this book is for you. Although I could have received a discount, as I had planned to review this book, I did not receive the discount, because I was tardy in utilizing my promo code. I still wanted the book, so I did purchase it at the 99 cent kindle book price."
"This book starts off with an explanation as to exactly what is included in our solar system. It helps to give second graders an idea of just how vast our solar system is. I think that this book does a great job of presenting information using language that most second graders will be able to understand. I would be surprised if a second grader was able to read this book themselves, but it has great pictures and facts. This book is a great place to start exploring our solar system."
"This book did not do a good job of explaining terms used like magnetosphere and satellite."

Just Mercy: a story of justice and redemption
He was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of the US’s criminal justice system. ‘Unfairness in the justice system is a major theme of our age … This book brings new life to the story by placing it in two affecting contexts: Stevenson's life work and the deep strain of racial injustice in American life … You don't have to read too long to start cheering for this man. Just Mercy will make you upset and it will make you hopeful … Bryan Stevenson has been angry about [the criminal justice system] for years, and we are all the better for it.’ The New York Times. When Stevenson was a 23-year-old Harvard law student, he started an internship in Georgia where his first assignment was to deliver a message to a man living on death row. This is a title for the many young adults who have a parent or loved one in the prison system and the many others who are interested in social justice, the law, and the death penalty. [It] demonstrates, as powerfully as any book on criminal justice that I’ve ever read, the extent to which brutality, unfairness, and racial bias continue to infect criminal law in the United States. But at the same time that [Bryan] Stevenson tells an utterly damning story of deep-seated and widespread injustice, he also recounts instances of human compassion, understanding, mercy, and justice that offer hope. Just Mercy is a remarkable amalgam, at once a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.” —David Cole, The New York Review of Books “A searing, moving and infuriating memoir . This book brings new life to the story by placing it in two affecting contexts: [Bryan] Stevenson’s life work and the deep strain of racial injustice in American life. Against tremendous odds, Stevenson has worked to free scores of people from wrongful or excessive punishment, arguing five times before the Supreme Court. Stevenson has been angry about [the criminal justice system] for years, and we are all the better for it.” —Ted Conover, The New York Times Book Review “Inspiring . “As deeply moving, poignant and powerful a book as has been, and maybe ever can be, written about the death penalty.” —The Financial Times “Brilliant.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer. Bryan Stevenson, however, is very much alive and doing God’s work fighting for the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless, the vulnerable, the outcast, and those with no hope. Just Mercy is his inspiring and powerful story.” —John Grisham “Bryan Stevenson is one of my personal heroes, perhaps the most inspiring and influential crusader for justice alive today, and Just Mercy is extraordinary. Bryan Stevenson is a real-life, modern-day Atticus Finch who, through his work in redeeming innocent people condemned to death, has sought to redeem the country itself. It is inspiring and suspenseful—a revelation.” —Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns “Words such as important and compelling may have lost their force through overuse, but reading this book will restore their meaning, along with one’s hopes for humanity.” —Tracy Kidder, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Mountains Beyond Mountains “Bryan Stevenson is America’s young Nelson Mandela, a brilliant lawyer fighting with courage and conviction to guarantee justice for all. Just Mercy should be read by people of conscience in every civilized country in the world to discover what happens when revenge and retribution replace justice and mercy.
Reviews
"My tendency is to put things into "liberal" and "conservative" buckets and this one seemingly fit into the liberal bucket and I am a professed conservative."
"I have a new hero . Bryan Stevenson. This is a great book."
"This is a system that condemns children to life imprisonment without parole, that makes petty theft a crime as serious as murder, and that has declared war on hundreds of thousands of people with substance abuse problems by imprisoning them and denying them help. JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. It's rare these days to meet someone who truly dedicates himself to those least able to help themselves, especially someone who isn't after media attention or self-promotion."
"Corruption and prejudice in the 1950's led to sending many innocent blacks and poor people to prison."

Until the Sea Shall Free Them: Life, Death, and Survival in the Merchant Marine (Bluejacket Books)
In 1983 the Marine Electric, a "reconditioned" World War II vessel, was on a routine voyage thirty miles off the East Coast of the United States when disaster struck: The old coal carrier sank in the frigid forty-foot waves and subzero winds of the Atlantic, and of the thirty-four men aboard, only three survived. Beneath the surface of Frump's overblown, melodramatic writing style lies the intriguing story of Robert Cusick, one of only three crew members to survive the sinking of the Marine Electric, a coal ship that ran aground in the waters off Norfolk, Va., in 1983. The book chronicles not only its foundering, but also Cusick's fight to expose the system that fostered such an avoidable tragedy, as Frump revisits the story for which he won two national reporting awards when he broke it for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Course Correction: A Story of Rowing and Resilience in the Wake of Title IX
A powerful testament to the impact of sport on our lives.”—Billie Jean King Wild. meets The Boys in the Boat , a memoir about the quest for Olympic gold and the triumph of love over fear. Forty years ago, when a young Ginny Gilder stood on the edge of Boston’s Charles River and first saw a rowing shell in motion, it was love at first sight. Set against the backdrop of unprecedented cultural change, Gilder’s story personalizes the impact of Title IX, illustrating the life-changing lessons learned in sports but felt far beyond the athletic arena. Heartfelt and candid, Gilder recounts lessons learned from her journey as it wends its way from her first glimpse of an oar to the Olympic podium in 1984, carries her through family tragedy, strengthens her to accept her true sexual identity, and ultimately frees her to live her life on her terms. “Filled with lyrical descriptions of rowing on the water and detailed portrayals of the workouts she endured to build up her strength and stamina, the narrative flows with the passion the author feels for her sport… The author's ardent story is one of struggle and triumph, of shrugging off the naysayers to follow a dream to its end, whether good or bad, and of following the heart. Course Correction is about taking time to heal and exploring the joy that lies beyond adversity.”— Tori Murden McClure , first woman to row alone across the Atlantic Ocean and author of A Pearl in the Storm “Ginny Gilder not only shares her journey of becoming a world-class athlete, but of growing up—the searing self-talk of a teenage girl, her homage to the sport of rowing that both gave and helped make meaning of her life. Beautifully written, this memoir will not fail to hold you in its powerful wake, page after page delivering the wisdom that only deep reflection and experience can bring.”— Daniel J. Boyne , author of The Red Rose Crew : A True Story of Women, Winning, and the Water. Simply put, I loved this book!” — Lynne Cox , author of Swimming to Antarctica: Tales of a Long-Distance Swimmer and Grayson “Whether you’re a wetbob or landlubber, Ginny Gilder’s lyrical descriptions of rowing will have you yearning to be on the water, while her gripping life story will keep you eagerly turning the pages. Part memoir, part sports history, the work is also a love letter to rowing and to Yale, to the author’s parents and her siblings, to her partners and her children, to Olympians, past, present and future, and to female athletes everywhere.”— Madeleine Blais , author of In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle.
Reviews
"The work marks the personal journey of Gilder, and her evolution of self is revealed with a great deal of sensitivity, honesty, passion, and clarity."
"This story is extremely well written, spinning the threads of the author’s different identities as a product of a dysfunctional family, a rower, a sexual adult and a parent together with unflinching honesty and an objective voice that is both compelling and sometimes haunting."
"Ginny Gilder describes her life as a child and her rowing career as broken out by the four divisions of the rowing stroke."
"Having read Boys In the Boat, I expected the same upbeat story, but was surprised at the difference in the story line."
"She also weaves the story of falling in love with her partners so beautifully, it touches you heart with her deep desire."
"A truly engaging book with something for everyone."
"I am not a rower or an athlete nut I loved this book."
