America's Bitter Pill: Money, Politics, Backroom Deals, and the Fight to Fix Our Broken Healthcare System
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • America’s Bitter Pill is Steven Brill’s acclaimed book on how the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, was written, how it is being implemented, and, most important, how it is changing—and failing to change—the rampant abuses in the healthcare industry. But by chance America’s Bitter Pill ends up being much more—because as Brill was completing this book, he had to undergo urgent open-heart surgery. [Brill] has pulled off something extraordinary.” —The New York Times Book Review “A thunderous indictment of what Brill refers to as the ‘toxicity of our profiteer-dominated healthcare system.’ ” — Los Angeles Times “A sweeping and spirited new book [that] chronicles the surprisingly juicy tale of reform.” — The Daily Beast “One of the most important books of our time.” —Walter Isaacson “Superb . Brill has achieved the seemingly impossible—written an exciting book about the American health system.” — The. New York Review of Books From the Hardcover edition. [Steven Brill] has pulled off something extraordinary—a thriller about market structure, government organization and billing practices.” — The New York Times Book Review “A thunderous indictment of what Brill refers to as the ‘toxicity of our profiteer-dominated healthcare system’ . For its insights into our nation’s fiscal, psychological and corporeal health—and for our own long-term social well-being—it is a book that deserves to be read and discussed widely by anyone interested in the politics and policy of healthcare.” — Los Angeles Times. [Brill’s] book brims with unconventional insight delivered in prose completely uninfected by the worn out tropes and tired lingo of the Sunday shows.” — The Daily Beast “This is one of the most important books of our time. Brill has achieved the seemingly impossible—written an exciting book about the American health system.” — The. New York Review of Books. “Steven Brill’s new book about the process of passing the Affordable Care Act is so meticulously reported, I found myself surprised by many details of a process I myself was deeply involved in. Brill has written an outstanding book about the administration’s efforts to pass Obamacare. “A landmark study, filled with brilliant reporting and insights, that shows how government really works—or fails to work.” —Bob Woodward “ America’s Bitter Pill is deeply impressive, an important diagnosis of what America needs to know if we’re ever to develop a healthcare system that is fair, efficient, and effective.” —Tom Brokaw “In America’s Bitter Pill, Steven Brill brilliantly ties together not only the saga of Obamacare, but also the larger story of our dysfunctional healthcare system and its disastrous impact on both businesses and ordinary Americans.
Reviews
"The author clearly, and often infuriatingly, explains why Obamacare ended up being so ineffectual, limited, and riddled with unintended consequences as a result of all the compromises in favor of special interest groups who made sure a real reform would not be passed."
"After all, it protects those with vested interests and expensive lobbyists - keeps the insurance companies in the mix by steering away from the "single payer" idea that much of the world uses so efficiently, bars the government from bargaining with the pharmaceutical companies (so we end up with drug price 50% higher than the rest of world - so much for "free markets" so admired by these folks)."
"I think that it fairly criticized the Administration and more or less compared the roll out to how a Republican run state (Kentucky) did a much better job from the beginning in implementing ObamaCare. The drug companies, medical device companies and the hospital oligarchies came out looking pretty bad and the insurance companies came out looking better than expected. He highlighted an Insurance company named Oscar in NY that seems to be on track. I have to say that I he puts too much faith in the medical profession as organizational people, but I give him credit for risking criticism from people like me."
"As observed frequently through the book, Obamacare's proponents early gave up any hope of controlling medical costs, and began the process of "buying" support of its likely opponents by promising them more customers and more profits, meanwhile engaging in extensive backroom dealing with Congressmen to get a bill, any bill, through Congress; and "explaining" all his to the public sometimes with deliberate and knowing falsehoods. The result was a bill that according to one report was just short of 1,000 pages long; and to some other reports even longer, plus regulations of an as yet unknown length, but lots longer. But the Bill accomplished the one result that was paramount to its supporters--get some version of universal health care into the law, and it will immediately become an entitlement which can never be eliminated. That's what careful review of a proposed law is supposed to prevent; and that's what wasn't provided for this Bill, governing an industry that is reported to be one-sixth of our economy. But now we have the law, and it must await the test of time, and a second presentation to the Supreme Court to see whether at least 5 Justices are willing to salvage the Bill by ignoring its quite explicit language, or will just apply the law as written, which will, we are assured, create chaos."

Waking Up Blind - Lawsuits Over Eye Surgery
And the medical center where you were treated is ignoring the problem. Waking Up Blind is the story of how an eye surgeon became the cause of an array of medical problems for his patients. While my novels deal with fictional medical disasters, Harbin spins a devastating, real-life account that will make the reader forever wary of the charming, super doctor.” —Robin Cook, Author of Coma and Outbreak.
Reviews
"--Dr. Tom Harbin a highly respected Cornell trained ophthalmologist’s details the twisting, turning, tale of lies, cover-ups, deceit, and deception that haunt Emory’s past. Overall, leadership was to blame, patients received unnecessary eye surgeries, good-hearted Emory physicians were blackmailed, and rewards were distributed to those that kept quiet. Your opinion will sway back and forth as you listen to the eloquent, compelling words spoken, as Emory’s top ophthalmologist’s tries to defend his actions during several ethics committee hearings."
"As a physician I know all to well that abuse of power can be a lethal mix in the quality care of patients."
"Clearly, patient safety has become a priority at every major medical center. Not only are avoidable medical errors less likely today, Universities have grown far less tolerant of potentially fraudulent billing practices, as a result of huge public settlements paid by major teaching hospitals to reimburse the Medicare program for past practices. Lastly, there is substantially more protection for those whose ethics compel them to question potentially inappropriate and abusive practices, along with an established investigative structure that is less likely to whitewash an allegation. It is a remarkable tribute to medicine that society is surprised when human nature at its worst invades the medical citadel, while we have long-since ceased to be surprised when it invaded the corporate boardroom, the city council, the federal government, or even the local house of worship."
