The Art of Invisibility: The World's Most Famous Hacker Teaches You How to Be Safe in the Age of Big Brother and Big Data
In this explosive yet practical book, Kevin Mitnick uses true-life stories to show exactly what is happening without your knowledge, teaching you "the art of invisibility"--online and real-world tactics to protect you and your family, using easy step-by-step instructions. This kind of behavior is the opposite of giving normal people freedom and security, of valuing and respecting them as humans--and it's happening more and more. The answer to peeping eyes and cyber theft is to move society toward greater cyber-security and it all starts with essential education about being private and invisible in our daily lives. "Who better than Mitnick -- internationally wanted hacker turned Fortune 500 security consultant -- to teach you how to keep your data safe from spear phishing, computer worms, and Fancy Bears? "Mitnick's new book aims to help everyone -- from the everyday internet users to the hardcore paranoid -- do a better job of keeping personal information private. "Intriguing, insightful and extremely educational into the mind of one who truly mastered the art of social engineering with the use of a computer and modern day technologies.
Reviews
"The authors, Kevin Mitnick and Robert Vamosi, document the myriads of ways that others can spy on our activities. Mitnick tells the story of how the famous John McAfee, on the lam, was found supposedly by coordinates listed in the meta data of a photo posted online. Some of the pointers are pretty basic, such as using strong passwords, and being careful to setup your home Wifi using the latest security protocols. These tactics include things such as using "burner" phones, paid for with cash, and using encryption tools to hide the data on our laptop. The really meaty parts of the book provide extreme tactics to remain anonymous on the internet. The authors present a LOT of different ways to make your online persona more invisible. Being anonymous in today’s digital world requires a lot of work and constant vigilance.""
"It seemed poorly edited and really didn't give much practical information other than advising you to be very paranoid and that not much you do is secret anymore."
"Full of good suggestions to promote your own security even if you have no criminal intent."
"Well written and a book everyone should read if they have a cell phone or a computer."
"I love this book."
"Eye opening!"

The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone
Veteran technology journalist Brian Merchant reveals the inside story you won't hear from Cupertino-based on his exclusive interviews with the engineers, inventors, and developers who guided every stage of the iPhone's creation. This deep dive takes you from inside One Infinite Loop to 19th century France to WWII America, from the driest place on earth to a Kenyan pit of toxic e-waste, and even deep inside Shenzhen's notorious "suicide factories." The One Device is a roadmap for design and engineering genius, an anthropology of the modern age, and an unprecedented view into one of the most secretive companies in history. "Like the best historians, Merchant... unpacks the history of the iPhone in a way that makes it seem both inevitable in its outline and surprising in its details. Merchant's book makes visible that human labor, and in the process dispels some of the fog and reality distortion that surround the iPhone. "Merchant does the important work of excavating and compiling large numbers of details and anecdotes about the development of the iPhone, many of them previously unrecorded... "Brian Merchant gives us a rare look inside Apple, chronicling the development of the iPhone with details about everything from the selection of raw materials to the product's famous launch event. "Fascinating... the author writes in the style of a fast-paced novel, with vivid details that help readers really understand how the iPhone was devised and launched.
Reviews
"When I first heard of this book, I was really interested in reading it and pre-ordered it on Amazon – since I like to ready and study the history and development of technology and Silicon Valley. If you want *just* a history of the development of the first iPhone, this book may not be for you – except for the last chapter. Then a chapter into the history of the phone, electronic communications and the smartphone. Then on to a chapter (“Minephones”) on the sources of materials of smartphones. And onto a chapter on the ARM microprocessor (“Strong-ARMed”). Then to a side-tracked chapter and history of Siri (along with voice recognition, and artificial intelligence). Then finally the last chapter of the book – the last 50 pages or so (out of 380 pages) – “The One Device” - is the meat of what I was looking for – getting more deeply into the details (as much as one could to a general reading audience). Overall, I would describe The One Device as a book version of the history of the smartphone analogous to the 1996 three hour PBS television documentary about the PC industry titled, “Triumph of the Nerds” – which I often say, is the best three hours of television, or at least documentary television, ever made."
"Gives a detailed account of the various inventions that occurred before the creation of the iPhone."
"Fascinating deep dive into the device that has changed & shaped our world."
"Merchant takes you on an adventure across the world and through time to tell the REAL story of the iPhone."
"Interesting backstory."
"Interesting, but technical."
"Solid book that really does give you a complete picture of the iPhone life."
"Great read."

"The book was so simple and easy to follow. This book will go over various topics and then at the end of the chapter it will just say, "Please review questions in section etc, etc, etc before continuing to the next chapter" I hate flipping back and forth between reading material and question pools in the back of the book. In the end this book will work and some of you might just say I have a different way of learning than others which is true."

"Very informative book and not difficult to assimilate."
"This books offers an excellent high level overview of the history of the telephony network and the migration to a nearly all digital network including detailed coverage of all aspects and issues of the modern digital systems."
"Plus, working the supplied answers to example problems backwards (because my answers didn't match the author's), I've come across two examples I believe the author made a fundamental error, to-which the teacher says, "yeah, I guess you could do it either way.""
"An excellent book for introducing anyone (with a technical interest) to digital signal processing."
"I had a master of science course in 1984 named Digital Switching Systems and this book the text book of that course, I enjoyed so much of reading the book and how simple and clear was explained all the modern Digital Telephony at that time."

Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business
Originally published in 1985, Neil Postman’s groundbreaking polemic about the corrosive effects of television on our politics and public discourse has been hailed as a twenty-first-century book published in the twentieth century. “I can’t think of a more prophetic, more thoughtful, more necessary – and yes, more entertaining – book about media culture.” –Victor Navasky, National Book Award-winning author of The Art of Controversy “All I can say about Neil Postman’s brilliant Amusing Ourselves to Death is: Guilty As Charged.” –Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons “As a fervent evangelist of the age of Hollywood, I publicly opposed Neil Postman’s dark picture of our media-saturated future.
Reviews
""Amusing Ourselves to Death" is an amazingly written and well-argued book. Today, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have bite-sized debates where one side speaks for 1 minute and the other side gets a 30-second rebuttal. Clearly, the people then were different from the people now in terms of mainstream intelligence. The reason, Postman argues, is that the people in Dickens' era were children of "The Age of Typography," and the people today (us) are the children of "The Age of Show Business," or "The Age of Television." This book was written in 1985, but don't be fooled; it still wields enormous relevance today -- The chapter titled, "Peek-a-Boo-World" as well as the "Information-to-action-ratio" theory outlined in it are particularly pertinent regarding the modern-day use of the internet, especially with portable laptops, tablets, and cellphones."
"The coverage this book got after 2016 US primaries has further fueled the interest of those who are looking for gratification to find arguments that confirm to their views of the contemporary world. Under the influence of a biased yearning to find a way out of the 2016 US political landscape, this book is a panacea; it categorically puts the blame for this presumed gaffe on the evolution of show business in the coeval society. All that this book does is present an aha moment, something on the lines of ‘I knew it!’ Otherwise, any serious explorer of this topic should start with 1984 by George Orwell or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley instead of picking up this text."
"Although the book was written twenty years ago, it is even more relevant today. Will young people even be able to read books?"
"The future and the present seem startlingly similar to aldous huxley and neil postman's vision of it, and that is frightening."
