Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio (Sound On Sound Presents...)
Learn the subtle editing, arrangement, and monitoring tactics which give industry insiders their competitive edge, and master the psychological tricks which protect you from all the biggest rookie mistakes. Pick up tricks and tips from leading-edge engineers working on today's multi-platinum hits, including Michael Brauer, Serban Ghenea, the Lord-Alge brothers, Tony Maserati, Manny Marroquin, Dave "Hard Drive" Pensado, Jack Joseph Puig, Mark "Spike" Stent, Phil Tan, Andy Wallace, and many, many more . Amazon Exclusive: A Letter from Mike Senior on Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio , "The 'Why The Hell' Challenge". In all these cases I've started with real-world small-studio recordings and used widely available mass-market technology to remix it to a commercial level, all without ever setting foot inside a "real" studio. If you want that kind of transformation for your music, then you can find a detailed explanation of my method in Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio . The second reason you might want to take notice of these mixing techniques, though, is that they've been drawn not only from my own professional experience, but also from more than four million words of first-hand interviews with the highest-profile engineers and producers on the planet. Amongst many other things in Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio , I try to deliver a stout kicking to the following questionable (but surprisingly pervasive) pieces of received wisdom: Indeed, the two most celebrated mixing speakers of all time, the Yamaha NS10 and the Auratone 5C Super Sound Cube, both have extremely uneven frequency-response plots, but excellent time-domain performance. Those common experiences are just the tip of the iceberg, and it's only by learning to work around the fickleness of your own hearing that you can begin to get decent mix results reliably. Corrective processing can certainly produce unmusical results, but it's important to realize that it doesn't have to, even if you're just using the editing facilities built into your software DAW. Furthermore, almost every small-studio production I've worked on sounded more musical (and became a lot easier to mix) once careful timing and tuning correction had been applied. In that case, it's much better to start with those while your ears are fresh, and while you've still got lots of mix real estate and computer CPU power to play with. In fact, a lot of the established classic reverb units sound pretty unnatural (the AMS RMX16, say, or the EMT 140 plate), but that doesn't stop them from appearing all over the current charts. I call this the "silver bullet" myth--that comforting delusion that the only thing separating your mix from the ones you hear on the radio is some single esoteric process. The malaise can almost always be traced to a whole selection of minor misjudgments that have been made at various points in the arrangement, editing, and mixing process. It doesn't matter if you have to replace the drums with samples, stuff synth pads between the guitar layers, add new backing vocals, or remove certain instruments entirely--just as long as your final product sounds great enough to make the client a happy bunny.

"Mike Senior untangles the seemingly chaotic workflow of the top mix engineers and outlines the processes that, with practice, will lead to higher quality mixes. Along with explaining how to identify the problem and techniques that might be used to solve the problem, the author provides lists of cost effective plugins that may not be bundled with your DAW software."
"Implementing just a few of the tips mentioned in this book will improve your mix, but the wealth of information and ideas overall will broaden your view and equip you with knowledge and techniques to seriously understand and improve your approach to recording and enhance your listening environment for optimum results."
"This is the most informative book on mixing and audio engineering that I have encountered."
"I bought this book to help me get from a hack who had some nice equipment to someone who could make some passable mixes with my stuff."
"Coming from mixing on a standalone DAW (Roland Vs2480 which I still record onto because of it's stability) to mixing on a laptop PC(with Reaper) was a jump that took a few stages for me and this book was the icing on the cake. The advice about ABing between speakers and between your mix and reference audio is great as this welcomes you back to the real world and so you can be sure your mix is as good as you can make it."
"Sure, you have to go and put in the hours and years of practice, but this book gives you a thorough rundown on how to avoid 90% of the sonic shortcomings that will stop you getting there."

Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th
'Friday the 13th' introduced moviegoers to a new kind of cinematic terror - shocking, visceral, and graphic. "A must-have for the library of anyone who likes Hollywood biographies, film books, or horror. "This book was utterly fantastic; in its presentation, substance and obvious adoration for the material.
Reviews
"Fantastic, not only great for F13th fans, anybody who loves movies should read this amazingly detailed behind the scenes of movie making book, BUT if you are a fan of Horror flicks or the Slasher genre you'll find this book an intensely interesting read on how to bring to life a scary film , BUT if you are a Friday the 13th fanatic GET THIS BOOK NOW it is a MUST read, everything is here... writers, directors, actors, producers, studio heads, everybody details how, when, where and why these films were made: for every single classic Jason movie, its super long, but it is so good, you don't want it to end, and it will make you see the movies many times again, even the ones you don't like that much, highly recommended."
"There are many delightful insights into the making of this franchise: Sean Cunningham’s own tortuous journey to making the slasher of slashers in 1980; a casting coup involving Betsy Palmer, a role she took up because her Mercedes conked out and she needed a new gas guzzler for the new decade: the details are what makes this book a wonder."
"All ten of the Friday The 13th movies (plus Freddy vs Jason but not the 2009 remake) are covered in absolute detail with loads of interviews with the actors (the stars for lack of a better word), the producers/directors etc you name it but the opinions are honest if people regretted ever being associated with the franchise, didn't get along with x it's still put in and helps make it such an outstanding read."
"Peter Bracke did an excellent job putting together this behind the scenes chronicle of arguably the most popular, controversial, and longest running horror franchise in cinematic history."
"I also own the hardcover copy of this, but decided to double-dip for the enhanced digital ebook, and it did not disappoint."
"Believe it not this is a quick read."
"If you're a fan of the Friday The 13th films or if you are simply interested in filmmaking, this is a wonderful read."
"With interviews and pictures rarely seen, this book tells fans everything they've wondered, and much of what they didn't."
