Into the Wild
Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profound pull of the American wilderness on our imagination; the allure of high-risk activities to young men of a certain cast of mind; the complex, charged bond between fathers and sons. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity , and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Anyone who ever fancied wandering off to face nature on its own harsh terms should give a look. "Engrossing...with a telling eye for detail, Krakauer has captured the sad saga of a stubborn, idealistic young man."

"My daughter needed this book for her sophomore English class."
"Starving to death must not be a very pleasant experience, I know people who do all sorts of crimes and face dangerous situations, degrade their life, just to avoid having an empty stomach. Aren't we all at times tempted to leave everything and head for the secluded mountains and forests in search for inner peace and to find the answers to those hard questions of life, the truth of why we are living. in early years of 1990's when he was started hitchhiking after his graduation, to find the answers to his inner questions, I too was facing extremely difficult situations and from early childhood the question of finding the ultimate truth of life is the one repeating itself in my mind 24x7."
"I enjoy reading accounts of people who venture out into the wild to find meaning."
"In reading both of these I got a very good picture of who Chris McCandless was and why he decided to detach from his parents and travel."
"I have to admit that the only reason I read this book was due to a request by my daughter who had to read it as part of her 11th reading assignment."
"I think that he truly at the time of his demise felt totally elated that he had in the last few years of his life been and experienced true and unadulterated nervana, and that was enough, even at the tender age of 24."

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. “Bill Bryson could write an essay about dryer lint or fever reducers and still make us laugh out loud.” – Chicago Sun-Times.
Reviews
"I'm a sexagenarian who, on a recent vacation, happened to walk out and back on the first three miles or so of the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail (Springer Mtn, GA) and, in a fit of exhilaration, decided then and there that I would, by golly, hike the AT before I died. As I was joyfully entertained by his incisive sense of humor, I was simultaneously and seriously learning history, biology, geology (and several other -ologies) as well as being discomfitted by Bryson's documentation of our culture's dismissive practices regarding ecology."
"Read one and except for a few events, you've pretty much read them all and almost any extended backpacking trip involves the same rigors, risks, weather and that mixture of misery and exhilaration."
"Bill's storytelling captured me immediately...I was taking every step he took, I enjoyed every vista he looked out on, I was eavesdropping on his conversations with his fellow hikers and feeling the spectrum of emotions held for his friend and hiking companion."
"An adventure that walks you experientially and historically through the nation's longest series of trails from Georgia to Maine while feeling every fear from blisters, hunger, thirst, wildlife, climate changes, man's limitations and nature's nuances, all the while trekking with a forty pound pack on your back, and any one of these could do you in, well it's a wonder why the wild is so compelling."
"With the film in theaters, I decided to pick it up and give it a go. I loved this book, and place it among Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild," Cheryl Strayed's "Wild," and Elizabeth Gilbert's "The Last American Man" in terms of well-written essays that explore our yearning to return to a simpler, untethered way of life."
"Unfortunately some of his stories about what happened to people along the trail, made me not that interested in walking any trail."
"I think Bill Bryson is an incredibly good writer whose humor extends to poking as much fun at himself as he does at others."
"Bill Bryson is a great story teller and has become a family favorite, especially in audio version."

Wild (Oprah's Book Club 2.0 Digital Edition): From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection: This special eBook edition of Cheryl Strayed’s national best seller, Wild ,features exclusive content, including Oprah’s personal notes highlighted within the text, and a reading group guide. Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2012: At age 26, following the death of her mother, divorce, and a run of reckless behavior, Cheryl Strayed found herself alone near the foot of the Pacific Crest Trail--inexperienced, over-equipped, and desperate to reclaim her life. While readers looking for adventure or a naturalist's perspective may be distracted by the emotional odyssey at the core of the story, Wild vividly describes the grueling life of the long-distance hiker, the ubiquitous perils of the PCT, and its peculiar community of wanderers. But Strayed doesn't want sympathy, and her confident prose stands on its own, deftly pulling both threads into a story that inhabits a unique riparian zone between wilderness tale and personal-redemption memoir. Two months before Wild was published I stood on a Mexican beach at sunset with my family assisting dozens of baby turtles on their stumbling journey across the sand, then watching as they disappeared into the sea. Echoing the ever-popular search for wilderness salvation by Chris McCandless (Back to the Wild, 2011) and every other modern-day disciple of Thoreau, Strayed tells the story of her emotional devastation after the death of her mother and the weeks she spent hiking the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail. As her family, marriage, and sanity go to pieces, Strayed drifts into spontaneous encounters with other men, to the consternation of her confused husband, and eventually hits rock bottom while shooting up heroin with a new boyfriend. Woefully unprepared (she fails to read about the trail, buy boots that fit, or pack practically), she relies on the kindness and assistance of those she meets along the way, much as McCandless did.
Reviews
"Being an avid reader of true life adventures, this is definitely one of my favorites.I think what I loved about this story, is it is so honest, and primal. We all have times in our lives when we want to just leave everything behind, and go on an essential walkabout.Yet, we don't really know how many people are required to be involved in a singular journey."
"Some of the events that she recalls are very sad, yet it's in the sadness, her happy moments, the scenes that she describes and her "radical aloneness" that I strangely felt empowered, just from reading her story. Hers' is not just one of a woman braving it through the wild of the PCT alone, but the story of a human being on their journey to save themselves."
"Her inner mental battles, the unique people she meets along the way, the beauty and majestic world that is put for you to see (or imagine seeing) is a journey I enjoyed taking with her."
"Although I did not hike the PCT I did backpack in Yosemite."
"I have an acquaintance who also hiked this trail, writing in a moleskin book and drawing beautiful line. illustrations. Having also lost my Mother recently, lived and hiked in No CA, gave me reference points. And when noted - and her feet, body was ravaged, why not contact Paul to, at least, get new boots, proper weight in. backpack? I took it to the northern woods of Michigan - where it's raw and unpopulated, to read - when I was scattering my own Mother's ashes."

Bitter Lemons
In Bitter Lemons, Durrell tells the perceptive, often humorous, story of his experiences on Cyprus between 1953 and 1956-first as a visitor, then as a householder and teacher, and finally as Press Advisor to a government coping with armed rebellion.
Reviews
"Interesting experiences and fascinating information on the events and attitudes that led up to the divided Cyprus we have today."
"An excellent story setting the scene for the troubles of the 1950s that is even more poignant right now since the new memorial stones in the British Cemetery in Kyrenia list all the military personnel killed in those troubles. Most of the soldiers, air personnel, sailors and police were under 25 when they died."
"I originally got this book because I had spent some time on Crete and wanted to recapture the feeling of being on such an island -- I got that beautifully in the first half of the book."
"I first read this some years ago, but rereading it gave me new insights into a country I have visited frequently."
"a perfect buying experience in every way."
"love the author's writing."
"The author paints a wonderful picture of what life on Cyprus was like just before and then during the beginning of the fight to free the island from control by the British."

Border: A Journey to the Edge of Europe
Border is a scintillating, immersive travel narrative that is also a shadow history of the Cold War, a sideways look at the migration crisis troubling Europe, and a deep, witchy descent into interior and exterior geographies. But she also possesses a gift that’s bestowed on only the best of travel writers: an ability to zero in on characters who illuminate the condition of a place in time.” ― The New York Times Book Review. Kassabova’s gifts as a poet shine when she describes the mystical, powerful landscape, the book’s true protagonist.” ― Newsday. “Rich with a profound sense of the region’s political and cultural history, this travelogue moves at an often meandering pace, its narrative broken up by condensed musings on personal conflict, historical ephemera or folklore. Kassabova devotes herself to intimate vignettes that sparkle with the dark charm of fairy tales and mystical fables. Kassabova’s gifts as a poet shine when she describes the mystical, powerful landscape, the book’s true protagonist. “An ethereal siren’s song woven from the myths, legends, and languages that converge in the borderland. The result is a portrait of a place out of time, separate from the countries the speakers inhabit―a distinctive space that the reader can enter too after falling under Kassabova’s spell. Reading Border is a dizzying reminder of the common humanity found on either side of any border.” ― The Christian Century. Kassabova proves to be a penetrating and contemplative guide through rough terrain.” ― Publishers Weekly , starred review. Border offers a dark look at a world of smugglers and spies, where the past maintains its hold even as people struggle to reach a brighter future." “A dreamlike account that subtly draws readers into the author’s ambivalent experience of a homeland that has changed almost beyond recognition.” ― Kirkus Reviews. “This is an exceptional book, a tale of travelling and listening closely, and it brings something altogether new to the mounting literature on the story of modern migration. [At a moment] when asylum-seekers are adrift from one end of the world to the other, Border makes for timely reading.” ― New Statesman (UK) “Riveting, beautifully written. Kassabova, a poet and novelist as well as an essayist, is ideally placed to take us on a journey to a corner of Europe that even today seems exotic and little known. In this region nearly everyone is at only one or two generational removes from exile and displacement, scattered among three alphabets and several nations; and along the way Kassabova meets treasure-hunters, refugees, retired spies, smugglers, hunters, botanists, healers, artists, Gypsies (Roma), forest rangers and -border guards. This is travel writing with lexical precision (“transhumance”, “karst”) and a sense of adventure, but with a distinctively female slant. With the best of travel writers, Kapka Kassabova is an explorer, viewing everything with the eyes of discovery, even as she uncovers strata of history and legend. She makes us long to peer closely at the map, and see these wondrous places for ourselves.” ― The Times Literary Supplement (UK).

Tobin for Running Press.
Reviews
"30% of the book is filled with one-off "novelty" maps, like the cartoon-ified, caricature map of Disney California Adventure produced solely to hang on construction walls during its rebirth; delicate, elegant "souvenir" maps of DisneySea meant to be purchased in a gift shop in large format. A further 15% is populated by a lot (maybe too many) of the "in-universe" maps: the "map" of the Hundred Acre Wood that serves as the backdrop to the loading area in Tokyo's Hunny Hunt ride; the exaggerated cartoon "map" of your "sailing route" in DisneySea's Sinbad's Storybook Voyage; the "map" of Vulcania that hangs in the Nautilus' map room in Disneyland Paris' walkthrough attraction; the elegant map of the world in the ceiling of Tokyo's Teddy Roosevelt lounge. And I suspect *most* people who pre-ordered this book a year in advance like I did were expecting it to be a comprehensive collection of those guide maps for each Disney Park through its history. Chapter 1 - Disneyland Park. Chapter 2 - Magic Kingdom. Chapter 3 - Epcot. Chapter 4 - Tokyo DisneySea. ... What you and I were looking for was to trace these parks via their guide maps. Pages 82 - 83, Tokyo Disneyland "fine art" souvenir map; 84 - 85, Blizzard Beach map; 86 - 87, Animal Kingdom aerial concept art; 88 - 89, Tom Sawyer Island Explorer's Map... Is this book worth having in your collection? And *if* this book were called "Aerial Concept Art of the Disney Parks," people would've known what they were getting and this would be 5-stars across the board as a well-curated collection of art with minimal text."
"There could have been a wider variety of maps, and maybe the they could have been larger on gatefold pages. The cover suggested that this was to be expected inside."
"The book's format makes it hard to reproduce the large maps that are the book's subject."
"Beautiful book but as others have stated the maps are very small and you can't really read them."
"This book is for you."
"Based on the product description, I was expecting to get tons of actual park maps from 1955 to today. Also, the other obviously had a huge fascination with Tom Sawyer's Island because he includes more renderings of it than he does for some of the actual parks. Seriously, if I had paid the full $30 retail price, I'd be mad and sending the book right back to Amazon."
"I was expecting maps that are given out in the parks from over the years."
"Was hoping to get a book that lets you compare how the parks evolved over the years, with maps of all parks shown throughout the years."

Reviews
"I left Poland at the age of seven but my roots will always be there and the spirit of my homeland flows in my veins. I give it four stars because sometimes the timing and instructions to the cooking process needs to be modified slightly but all round a gem!!!"
"And, it is very much a “coffee table book”: It is artistically laid out; there are very many photographs, both new and old; the writing is thoughtful and thought-provoking, with the stories, history and information very interesting to read; the content of the book—the combination of the pictures and the words—is often very poignant. About the recipes: As an example of the flexible instructions: The recipe for rose petal jam is to gather 3-4 large handfuls of the wild rose “Rosa canina” and place them in a stone mortar, slowly pour in about a pound of sugar and crush with the pestle to create a paste. In a way, that “loose”, open attitude is exactly what’s wonderful about Babcia’s (Grandma’s) recipes, but in another way, it won’t be helpful to a new cook."
"This book is not only beautiful but it tells such a heart-felt story about childhood memories and the loss of leaving your homeland."
"Beautiful pictures and her writing paints a picture of the unforgettable landscape, people and food of a beloved country that still remains a hidden gem to western cultures."
"The book was much larger and weightier than I expected, but it was the size that encouraged me to slow down, and sit and enjoy the stories and pictures."
"This is probably the most beautiful cookbook I have ever seen."
"The format and photography is as lovely as you could find in an art book."
"I'm looking forward to Beata's next book and also the publication of this book in the Polish language."

A Song of Africa
A SONG OF AFRICA: and the Roots of Boko Haram Thrill and Learn Fortune seeking engineer, Paul Jeffries, out to make millions on a state of the art telecommunications project in Nigeria reluctantly agrees to reach out to the idealistic American ambassador’s daughter who has fled into the besieged rebel enclave of Biafra to help refugees there in the mid 1960’s. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + To understand how the terrorist group Boko Haram has risen in Nigeria in recent years, one must be familiar with the history of that troubled nation, home to every fourth person on the African Continent. For example, it is intriguing how in an article in the Wall Street Journal, Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s mini bio of Abubakar Shekau, leader of the terrorist group Boko Haram, resembles the strategy of Uthman dan Fodio who led the first Jihad in Nigeria at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Would the air over the plain quiver with a colour that I had on, or the children invent a new game in which my name was, or the full moon cast a shadow over the gravel of the drive that was like me, or would the eagles of Ngong look out for me?” Isak Dinneson “Out of Africa” "This country is filled with foreign spies." Congratulations to Ron Wheatley for his independent presentation of a missionary perspective, affirming in advance that to which Benedict exhorts us - The message, the mystery, the value of human life, and the conditions in which it is lived."
Reviews
"The characters--among them a bright and somewhat cynical engineer and a stunning young woman, among many others--are deftly drawn, as is both the landscape and the turmoil of Nigeria (which continues to this day). The author's respect for the Nigerians coexists with a realistic, often tragic view of human nature, and is buttressed by his own experiences."
"We learn of the poor Nigerians (some of them with leprosy) and of expatriates who like the Fitzgeralds , Hemingways and Gertrude Stein in Paris in the 1920's, have it better. We discover that Christian missionaries are a problem in an oil-rich nation still unstable from the cultural and political points of view. We meet two foreigners--Paul and Maureen who look at Nigeria conditioned by their respective reasons for being there, despite the mutual attraction. As we familiarize with their relationship, we learn first-hand about the many-sided aspects of a country still having tribal feuds that echo those between the Sunnis and Shiites."

Long Long Honeymoon - Living Large in a Small Tin Can: Advice for Airstream / RV Travelers
Instead of jaunting off to honeymoon on a posh Pacific island, the newlyweds hitched up their trusty Ford diesel truck (nicknamed “SEEMORE”) and started exploring America. Their “long long honeymoon” journey stretched over 60,000 miles, ranging from Key West (the southernmost point in the United States) all the way up to Banff, Alberta (that’s in Canada, eh?). LONG LONG HONEYMOON - LIVING LARGE IN A SMALL TIN CAN combines the best of Sean's blog entries with original never-before-published anecdotes of the trip.
Reviews
"The book is from their early days as RV traveling - videographer, Bloggers, and many of their early efforts mirror the stories in the book, but often with more information than the videos had time for."
"The first video we saw was the one re: how to sleep in an RV... My husband DOES think I have assumed Cult Member status, however, and he takes every recommended purchase urging with a grain of salt.. til we buy the product and he has an epiphany!"
"I absolutely loved this book."
"If you are looking for a spark for your adventurous spirit, or some rather helpful tips to improve your RV life, or just a look at the humorous side of traveling in a tin can, then you will enjoy this book."
"`Long, Long, Honeymoon - Living Large in a Small Tin Can'. As an enthusiast and future Airstream owner, I am always on the lookout for a new source of information. When I discovered that Sean had written `Long, Long, Honeymoon, Living Large in a Small Tin Can', I was excited at the prospect of seeing him and his work in book format. I have a keen appreciation of the fact that all this wouldn't have been possible without the love and enthusiastic dedication of Sean's wife Kristy, who is often behind the camera in his videos, and sometimes in front of it."
"It is fun, helpful, and at times absolutely hysterical, like the opening salvo on the dreaded 1st time sewage tank dump: "The most unpleasant moment occurred after I removed the cap that covers the sewer opening on the side of our camper."
"Good read."
"Enjoyed the wry sense of humor and insights in to a lifestyle that many aspire to."
