Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (Big Nerd Ranch Guides)

Write and run code every step of the way — creating apps that catalog crime scenes, browse photos, track your jogging route, and more. BILL PHILLIPS is a senior Android instructor and software engineer at Big Nerd Ranch.
Reviews
"I'm reading this book in May of 2013, so the book is completely relevant. I gave up on the Nerd Ranch iPhone book because the latest version of XCode was too different than the author's. However, there are little things like "fill_parent" that are used in books like Hello Android which is now deprecated."
"The book explains how the code is written, but doesn't contain a lot about why a certain method or class is used. There is a forum on their website and "answer code" (i.e. the code copied from the book) that can be downloaded, but other than that there is little explanation beyond what's written."
"The purpose of an IDE is to speed things up and make them more accessible, and my sole criticism of Big Nerd Ranch is they seem to forget that sometimes (in this and their iPhone books). If you're even minimally mentally agile (as I), I HIGHLY recommend this book as a companion to Android Studio, and give yourself time and latitude to switch between the visual and text editors to see how they blend."
"I appreciate it when they show previous code as strikethrough in addition to the new code in bold. BTW, I have downloaded the projects in this book, which were coded in Eclipse, and imported some directly into Android Studio from the Studio menus. The only part of my learning experience that has been disappointing so far is the time required to launch a virtual device."

Making Things Talk: Using Sensors, Networks, and Arduino to See, Hear, and Feel Your World
Fully updated for the latest Arduino hardware and software, this book lets you combine microcontrollers, sensors, and networking hardware to make things... and make them talk to each other! Tom Igoe teaches courses in physical computing and networking, exploring ways to allow digital technologies to sense and respond to a wider range of human physical expression.
Reviews
"This well-written and heavily illustrated how-to book is focused on making interactive devices that can connect and send data to--or receive data from--servers and transform data into useful actions or reactions. Other projects in the book include a digital compass, an ultrasonic distance ranger, a toxic vapor sensor (with unique alert), doing barcode recognition using a webcam, plus more. And he emphasizes that we need to know more about "who the custodians of [our] data are, what they are collecting, and what the terms of our relationship with those custodians include. He adds: "I want you to know how these devices [in "Making Things Talk" and beyond] convert your actions into data, how they transmit that data to servers, and where they send those readings."
"Yeah, you could just complete one or more of these projects and have an interesting gadget or project - but, if you look at what you are doing with each of these projects as a learning experience and skill building exercises, they are then building blocks for the foundation to go on and build bigger and more complex things that talk to other things. Most of the projects are built with some specific components, but if you have one or more of the intermediate Arduino / Raspberry pi learning kits with a lot of the sensor components you probably have what you need to do some of the projects. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to build some interesting projects and learn a lot from doing that."

"The book is fun to read, but on a more serious level, the screen shots that show how to implement the book's suggestions for most recent operating systems makes the task at hand certainly less difficult."
"This book explains the concepts and then gives lots of Tips on what we can do, e.g. how to secure your home router connecting you to the internet, how to avoid doing everything in an admin account and risk letting bad guys get the same privileges if they hack in to your computer. I expect to be picking up this book many times over the coming months as I continually increase my information security and privacy to my level of comfort and convenience."

"This was the only study material I used."
"I never write reviews for products I buy, but I'm grateful for those of you who do. Your raving reviews of this book is what prompted me to buy it. A little bit about my background, so as to help base your judgment on where I started and what it took for me to pass this test...I graduated with a bachelors in management information systems in 2012. Since, I have worked as an IT systems analyst, not a networking position by any means, but I have been exposed to normal IT security awareness (i.e. password rules, disaster recover plans, clean desk policies, etc.). Just this book and a determination to learn the material as best as I can a short amount of time. But if you're needing to pass the Security+ certification, this book is a great place to start."
"I was sweating over my Security+ test but thanks to this book, I managed to pass on the first try!"
"Use another resource to prepare yourself for how the Sec+ exam questions are asked."
"I have had several students that have very little to no Cyber Security experience that have read this book from cover to cover and they were able to pass the CompTIA Security+ exam."
"Prior to reading this book my only real contact with Security+ occurred when I took a Sec+ online summer course two years ago through a local community college. Gibson provides enough information in each section to give you a solid foundation in all the different subject areas for the Sec+ exam. Those explanations, combined with the awesome chapter summaries, make the book such a great resource. Two days before the exam I skimmed through the book and focused on chapter summaries & sample questions."

"My method of study i chose to read this textbook cover to cover, taking all practice tests at the end of each chapter, along with the included practice exams on the disc. In addition to this text i went further to find online practice exams and Professor Messer videos on Youtube as free self studying material. The book covered the objectives and even went beyond which is why this makes a great on-the-job reference."
"Most importantly, I was looking for a book that could not only keep me engaged yet also provide the necessary educational materials. Presently I'm over a hundred or so pages in (the book is Bible thick) and have purposely slowed myself down at times to ensure lesson absorption but honestly could read this book like it was a spellbinding work of fanciful fiction. It really helps to have an actual, honest interest in the subject matter and there are times where you'll want access to several different operating systems."
"Just started, but it has been an easy to follow book so far."
"Came it great condition, book is a bible but it very entertaining and it's enjoyable."
"Amazing book packed with great information."
"I hardly had to touch this book, it just lays open on its own!"
"I am still getting ready for the exam but this book is well written, easy to understand, thorough, and humorous."
"I would highly recommend it to young IT techs that are trying to get a career in in information technology industry."

"how to create bokeh or the appearance of motion in a photo by fine-tuning the various types of "blur" available in the filters menu, (3.). how to combine a photo of a train taken at one angle with a photo of a bridge taken at another angle, and use the perspective tools to make it look like the train is actually coming right over the bridge at you... Believe me, reading about how to use vector-drawing tools to trace a photo and create a reusable logo from it is very different from actually creating the paths, subtracting one path from another, converting the paths into shapes, turning shapes into assets, saving color schemes along with your assets, and all the rest."
"Arrived as advertised and on time."
"The Item arrived on time and was better than expected."
"If any of you have tried to self learn Photoshop, good luck. I bought because it was like the class I took it first wanted to explain what a pixel was."
"It gets the reader into the program to perform a number of keystrokes on an image file provided from the Peachpit web site. As stated above, the first chapter is intended to familiarize the user with the Photoshop work space and tools. Each chapter ends with some Review questions and answers designed to solidify the user’s grasp of the lesson matter. With this aid, the user just starting out in Photoshop can gain a picture view of a specific tool’s purpose. Going on from this point in the book, the authors take the reader on a learning journey through Photoshop’s other features by providing a project involving that aspect of the program. I have been a Photoshop user for a number of years going back to the early single digit versions. Having a “Classroom in a Book” in my earlier years would have made life and digital photography considerably easier for me. For those fairly familiar with Photoshop, this book will make an excellent refresher and reference volume."
"Sure, considering we live in the digital internet age it was hard at times to concentrate doing lessons in a book, but they do have good source files for you to work on so you can drill the program into your head."

"readable encyclopedia of best practices on software quality, covering topics such as how to build classes, use data and control structures, debug, refactor, and code-tune. Yes, it would be nice if the book was updated to include substantive material on languages like Ruby or Python (cf. p. 65, Python "also contains some support for creating larger programs") but, in the words of Gertrude Stein, "Not everything can be about everything" -- though Code Complete does come pretty close. McConnell also sprinkles the text with classic words of wisdom, e.g. "The competent programmer is fully aware of the strictly limited size of his own skull" (Edsger Dijkstra), "Never debug standing up" (Gerald Weinberg), "Copy and paste is a design error" (David Parnas), "Any fool can defend his or her mistakes -- and most fools do." It is important to point out that even though this volume is encyclopedia-like, it does have both a sense of humor (e.g. "the encryption algorithm is so convoluted that it seems like it's been used on itself") and a clear authorial voice (e.g. "Though sometimes tempting, that's dumb."). 33, after quoting Edward Yourdon at length, McConnell adds "This lusty tribute to programming machismo is pure B.S. I found this to be bizarre, given that in the 1995 edition of "The Mythical Man-Month" Brooks states in no uncertain terms that he has changed his mind on this: "This I now perceive to be wrong" (p. 265). On a different note, although some of the on-line accompanying material is fascinating (e.g. the links to the original Dijkstra and Lawrence articles in ch."
"Very readable, excellent real-world examples and case studies, and many valuable insights."
"I'm a self taught programmer going on 5 years now doing it full time, and I have learned a lot of techniques that have filled in some holes in my skills."
"The Microsoft code way."
"Bad humor, takes a long time to convey information, but is useful."
"I'd also recommend the more recent Clean Code, especially for Java programmers, as it goes into more depth, even providing actual case studies in which code is dramatically cleaned up."
"I make all of my new programmers at least read selections from it (in fact that is part of our training program.)."
"Great book on software development."

The Personal Internet Address & Password Log Book

Reviews
"Book #1 is the red one I personally own and love, (this one is not currently available here but for comparisons, this is it) The Personal Internet Address & Password Logbook - Red If you want to read my review with photos, you can do so here, http://www.amazon.com/review/R35K16WUNGUFH6/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1441308148. Book #2 is similar to my own and is currently available here, The Personal Internet Address & Password Log Book (Like mine, it has cut out tabs in the pages, two letters per tab.). Book #3 is the smaller but thicker, spiral bound, white book, BookFactory® Password Journal / Password Diary / Mini Pocket Passwords Notebook, 120 Pages - 3 1/2" x 5 1/4", Durable Thick Translucent Cover, High Quality Wire-O Binding (JOU-120-MCW-A-(Password)) (This one is handy if you want the ability to hold it in one hand while writing on either side. Book #4 is the larger book with a bright geometric cover, Password Journal: Password Keeper / Music Gifts ( Internet Address Logbook / Diary / Notebook ) (Password Journals - Music (Carnvial)) (This one has noticeably lighter ink inside but definitely stands out on a bookshelf.). Book #5 is the larger black book with butterflies on it, Password Log: (An Internet Address and Password Journal) (I like that the ink is printed nice and dark so I gifted this one to my mom since her eyesight is not what it used to be.)."
"Now the passwords are accessible by us and not someone who may see a password on a little slip of paper on my husband's desk by accident."
"Our banks are always sending us notices to change our passwords every 3 months if not they lock you out."
"Nice book for keeping organized!"
"The inside the book is fine, but there is a huge sticker on the back of the book that states: "Warning----To avoid danger of suffocation, keep away from babies and children."
"Having a notebook where all the login information can be alphabetically organized for easy access was wonderful. Not the kind of binding you would expect in a reasonable well bound notebook. I am not sure if the paper in this book will withstand frequent erasures and re-writes without showing eraser marks or getting faded. It has a spiral bound inside (visible in the last picture) that is not very smooth. If you desire a quality notebook, you will be disappointed after mild usage, if not on first sight."
"Not happy with this LITTLE Book. Trying to make it work."
"I did not like this book, I thought it would be just for internet addresses and pass words, but it had all sorts of spacefor just addresses, phone numbers and everythng else I did not want."

"Initially I was delighted that this book was on my required course reading material as I bought upgrading and repairing PC's from Mike when I was younger to learn how to build a PC and really enjoyed the book and how detailed and thoughtfully laid out it was (even giving you history lessons) which made me laugh and oh and ah with interest. It certainly didn't resonate with me like my older book from him and I honestly remember very little from the book sadly enough which wasn't the case with upgrading and repairing in which I ended up reading it 4 times cover to cover just because it was fun and I learned new things I thought I had missed previously."
"It is a great companion to all the other Mike Myers text books."
"Information is good."
"I did borrow one of Mike Meyers' books (Guide toPC Troubleshooting) from my local library and liked it, so I bought this."
"It will get me through the class just fine, but I will definitely not be going into networking."
