Rough Guide to Music of the Himalayas
The dramatic scenery and spiritual promise of the Himilayas have prompted numerous artists and adventurers to make a pilgramage to their rugged slopes in search of beauty and inspiration.
Reviews
"After my first visit to Nepal I attempted to find recordings of some of the traditional village music, but it Kathmandu I could only find recordings of more popular contemporary styles of Nepali music."
"I listen to it over and over... oddly the only cut I find hard to listen to is the one of the nuns chanting....I love the diversity in the music, yet I feel there is a similarity in approach...I will keep listening to this CD!"
"The music on this album is incredible and wide-ranging: from subtle and refined Buddhist chants to exuberant and percussive festival tunes, from folkish flute airs in isolated valleys to streamlined studio collaborations with Western musicians, with hints of many different musical cultures converging and swirling in this mountainous region."
"Hence, there's the Chinese flute song with Japanese percussion titled "Himalayas" the dj mix of Tibetan monks and instruments evoking the atmosphere of the place, the Indian raga inspired by Kashmir, and the collaberation of an American guitarist and Tibetan nun."
"If you are a fan of pan-Asian music, in particular Nepalese, Tibetan, Chinese, Indian, Ladakhi and so forth, then you will certainly appreciate this music."
"I am a big fan of the Rough Guide series and this brand of music CDs has been invaluable in introducing me to various folk music traditions from around the world."

Best Cambodian Music

Escape From Dragon House
Fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch'hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer, Los Angeles sextet Dengue Fever blends the rhythms of sixties Cambodian pop--heavily influenced by American surf, rock, and early psychedelic garage bands--with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles. Escape from Dragon House is also darker, both musically and lyrically, with a fully realized style that melts all of the band's influences into one realized voice that is pure Dengue Fever.
Reviews
"i like the cd and a few others by dengue fever."
"Truthfully, I didn't know Cambodia had Pop music until I heard "Escape From Dragon House," the fantastic sophmore album of Dengue Fever. The group consists of five Americans, with an obvious knowledge of the last forty years of Pop Music and one incredible Cambodian lead vocalist, who before emmigrating was the toast of her country."
"I bought the original version of this CD after stumbling across Dengue Fever on the National Geographic world music website under Cambodia (even though the band is in Southern California -- where else!). I can't exactly claim to be a world music aficionado, but I do like to try different kinds of music from just about everywhere, and every once in a while I get lucky and find a real gem like this one. The music feels kind of like a time warp. There's one track in particular, "One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula," that makes me feel like I'm dissolving or something; I don't know how else to describe it."
"2003 doesn't seem like that long ago, but when you are waiting for a new Dengue Fever release...well, it seems like a long time. Dengue Fever's first release was so strong that I pulled the CD out of the player and bit through it."
"Take healthy doses of Ros Sereysothea (Cambodia's queen of Khmer garage rock and balladry) along with things like Fifty Foot Hose, the Doors, Pink Floyd, the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Kak, etc - all darker voices in the psychedelic realm - and you'll begin to get an idea of what this band's all about."
"I don't want to disparage the rest of this excellent band, but here, as in all 3 three other albums by Dengue Fever that I have, Nimol is the whole show."

The Music of Islam Vol. 15: Muslim Music of Indonesia, Aceh and West Sumatra
The Music of Islam Vol.
Reviews
"Having just read the ethnomusicological book "Divine Inspirations: Music and Islam in Indonesia," I desired to hear some musical examples but was astonished to find very few available in the United States. It focuses on Western Sumatra and the Aceh province; if that sounds familiar, it is because the northern tip of Aceh was smashed by a tsunami in December 2004 with devastation and much loss of life. This is followed by a series of drumming tracks of processions, dirges, and competitions, with various rhythms. The sound is similar to Japanese taiko and Korean pungmul drumming with a touch of Anglo-Dutch rhythms. Subjects cover earthquakes, school education, and fishing, with respect given to Allah and the Prophet."

Malaysia: Dream Songs & Healing Sounds
The Temiar people of the central Malaysian rainforest are deeply spiritual.
Reviews
"From the liner-notes... "The Malaysian rainforest is a vibrant environment, rich with sound from forest floor to canopy, river's edge to mountain crest. Temiar dreamsongs emerge from their engagement with the spirits of their resonant landscape, about 2500 square miles of lowland and highland rainforest in peninsular Malaysia. This is strictly the artistic and ritualistic expression of an ancient people who are singularly their own communal entity. This is not any New Agey fluff with digital thunderstorms in the background as synthesizer wankery pads along. On this disc though, there are times where the feeling is more like you are you, an outsider, who got lost in the rainforest at night but you heard this music in the distance and decided to follow it. Nervous, scared, or just shy, you don't fully approach the people, but you hang just far enough from the village to go unnoticed and listen to the music a little closer."

The Orphan's Lament
Reviews
"I'm looking for raw, natural talent - no studio stunts."
"If this CD doesn't move you, try it again."
"You gotta hear it to believe it."
"The focus of Huun Huur Tu music is traditional Tuvan folk songs, frequently featuring imagery of the steppes or of horses."
"The song "Steppe" sounds like it was written hundreds or even thousands of years ago, before The Pyramids, before The Silk Road, before almost anything but living in caves."
"Whereas Tibetan Buddhist-style throat-singing seems to stop and start while already in the overtone, Tuvan throat-singing usually starts in a normal voice (one note) and then in mid note or phrase the singers will shift into the overtones, and their actual overtones sound vastly different than those of the Tibetans as well. A couple (of the many) standout tracks are STEPPE and KHOMUZ MEDLEY."
"Every Tuvan album includes some khomuz jaw harp, and that's usually the low point of the album for me--the medley of khomuz here is perhaps the most listenable I've heard."

White Elephants & Golden Ducks: Enchanting Musical Treasures from Burma
Reviews
"Hlaing Win Maung, U Tin Yi, Kyaw Kyaw Naing, Sein Chit Tee, Maung Nay War, vocalist Yi Yi Thant, Tontay Thein Tan etc are among my favourites."
"Burmese music is unique in that more than most any other culture, Burma has used non-traditional instruments that found their way there and thoroughly incorporated them into Burmese traditional music."
"The question will undoubtedly be answered in the affirmative by anyone with even the slightest interest in the classical music of Southeast Asia in general and Burma in particular; this selection of songs exemplifies the romantic poetry of Burmese classical music and the performance of the musicians is of the best quality. One the other hand, if you have never been exposed to Burmese classical music, this just might be the beginning of a beautiful courtship, beginning perhaps with a few awkward moments (as you adjust your ears to the seemingly irregular rhythm of Burma) but leading to a solid romance."
"Burmese music is rather unique in style and instrumentation, although there are a number of common elements with other southeast asian countries."
"The Burmese musician's ability to fit foreign and indigenous instruments into these beautiful layered compositions is a real treat."
"Not the usual Asian music."
"Or was that Zoot Horn Rollo playing his guitar through Wurlizter pipes?"

Philippenes: Lute Music of Tboli
They play the hegelung, a thin wooden lute, whose lean and gracious sound box is prolonged by a long and slender neck.
Reviews
"The Hegalung of the T'Boli people is one of many slender 2-stringed lutes that once were common in the Philippine islands before the Spanish colonisation of the 1500's. Fingguy Flang and Luming Tuan, who are both master musicians of the Hegalung are also working women in Dekolon village, and this CD is recorded on site (you can even hear the rainforest birds and crickets in the background) so this IS authentic."

Just No Other Way
Coco Lee ~ Just No Other Way.
Reviews
"Some people had their biases because they had listened to her Chinese albums (among other things) as well. On the plus side: a decent mix of songs: r&b (#1-#4, #10-#11), slow jams (#5 and #7), and a couple of more upbeat songs (#6 and #9) though they aren't quite "dance" tracks as I normally look at them. My favorites among the songs are #1, #5, #7 and #9. The last minute was a lot of repetition of the lyrics with Coco wailing away. None of my own biases affected my thoughts on the album (except for me listening to it, something I don't usually do for r&b type albums). Anyone curious about the album in anyway should listen to it and not worry about that I or anyone else says."
""Do You Want My Love" is not very original but the song is credited for CoCo's vocal styling and her method of singing the song which makes it such a fine song. All in all, a little short but CoCo does attempt singing songs of various genres and it's not just 11 different versions of "Do You Want My Love"."
"I'm Asian but very detached from the Chinese music world (cuz it's so much about pretty faces instead of talent showcase nowadays). Judging from 3 tracks that I listened to, namely, Do U Want My Love, Just No Other Way, and Don't U Want My Love, Coco has the vocal RANGE talent, but her voice sounds much like the rest of the vocalists in HK/ Taiwan music industry."
"We live in a Multicultural Country with so many artists of different backgrounds, from Christina to Ricky, from Mariah to Celine, Tupac to Shaggy, but its hard to find a successful Asian artist in the U.S. b/c the truth is the Asian population is a relatively isolated group so its hard for people to feel connected to them. And I'm tired of people saying she sings with an accent, so does Enriquez Iglesias, Celine Dion, and there's more."

Best Thai Music

Ancient-Contemporary Music From Thailand
Imagine the inhabitants of the Menam Basin being called to dance and sing by the birds and monkeys, or imagine trying to become familiar with how the traditions of the ancient Indian and Khmer cultures developed. Elders no longer speak the story of how the Thais have lived and dreamed in their land for more than 1,000 years. The tunes here, based on folk forms that leave plenty of room for individual interpretation, run the gamut--there are lullabies, ensemble pieces for fiddle, percussion and gong, Thai folk rock tunes that make use of Western drum kit and electric keyboards, and a Thai brass band playing the National Anthem.
Reviews
"You don't have to be a scholarly music student to appreciate this 2-CD set; rather, by simply being open, mindful and reading the introductory material on Thai music traditions by Bruce Gaston, you can let yourself succumb to the enchantment of this ancient and at the same time very modern music."

Best Vietnamese Music

The Music of Vietnam
It is a distinctive mix of folk instruments and courtly formality--a highly disciplined and richly ornamented music originally conceived for moments of importance and ceremony. Several unusual instruments are employed, including the dan bau , a one-string guitar with a bamboo stem that bends notes like a whammy bar , and the k'ni , a rifle-shaped fiddle with a mouth attachment that can create a voice-box effect similar to that used by rock guitarists such as Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh in the '70s. The music is so expertly performed and so beautifully sequenced--the focus shifting from ensemble to solo pieces, from stringed instruments to flutes--that attention never wanders. The most exciting pieces feature a clarinet playing long lines over pounding percussion, a combination common to the music of many Southeast Asian nations.
Reviews
"Item as described."
"Truly a nice selection of music from the North and South, played on instruments foreign to the ear in America."
"Not sure who put this together or where it comes from, but it is an excellent set of traditional vietnamese music which is very hard to find good examples of."
"That book(s) for the traditional discs share the same background material and then have notes on the individual selections. I've had this cranked up on my large car stereo and the sound is clean with good separation. I don't have a large collection of east Asian discs but this is easily my favorite."
"Viet Nam is most often identified with communism and with war, which is a pity, because the music of Viet Nam is as expressive and as complex as pieces written by Bach or Beethoven."
