I did not know a simple way to tell the difference between real peals vs. fake ones, let alone freshwater vs. akoya. The only downside about freshwater pearls is that they are mass market, and they are affordable - which is good and bad. If you want to make a wedding present to your wife, for example, she will know that those are freshwater pearls and they are mass market. They are hard to breed, salt water is not very easy to grow pearls in. Akoya pearls are a little more pink and look a little less fake than the freshwater ones. For example, you can’t spray perfume all over them and when you are done wearing them, you need to apply soft cloth to clean them up and put them in a box. They are generally bigger, grown in the south seas (i.e. Australia). They shine better (better luster), they will last longer (more nacre in case of Akoya), they have fewer imperfections and so forth. I had experience with both AAA and AAAA from pearl source so read more below. Akoya pearls use a similar system, starting with A to AAA and then Hanadama. More mature women would look better in 8-9 size pearls but expect to pay more. Similar to necklace, I ordered AAA and AAAA freshwater for my mother in law. I didn’t buy one, for some reason I don’t find pearl rings attractive, sorry! So my bracelet arrived in blue box, which is fine to the touch but is actually very poorly made. So what this means is that bracelet is in blue box, earrings and necklace is in red. As a side note, if you are choosing between freshwater and Akoya - (1) you need to decide if those pearls will be worn every day or a few times per week. If you are buying pearls for every day I suggest freshwater, as they are not as easy to break and don’t really require much maintenance. Also, (2) if you are buying these pearls for a smaller occasion, i.e. Christmas, then you can go with the cheaper ones, i.e. freshwater. I don’t see a reason throwing away money to buy high end pearl brand."
