Launching into the tale with lyrics written in couplet form, Earle’s honey-coated, yet gritty vocals define the lineage of the song’s persona: “Well my name’s John Lee Pettimore / Same as my Daddy and his Daddy before.” From this point forward, the speaker explains that the grandfather mentioned would very rarely come around; when he did, it was for supplies required in the production of illegal whisky."
