"This is a great tool, but I wouldn't suggest using this while you are trying to talk to someone, because it takes forever to scroll through the multiple tenses to get to the one you want. However, if you want to learn the proper conjugations for future use or for a written assignment, this feature is great, especially for students. Once you select this option, you are led to a handy list of categories to choose from (emergencies, dining, health, postal services, etc). There are a plethora of phrases in these sections that you will surely find useful if you are a tourist or are learning the language. In the main menu, if you click over to "Learn" there are several opportunities to improve your language skills and help you excel in class. I purchased this from Amazon and received it quicker than expected, with everything in tact and working (batteries included), and with free shipping."
"Knowing about this limited life span, I question why and whether a new purchase would be worth doing."
"I searched all the Spanish/ English dictionaries available on Amazon. I enjoy reading in Spanish, but often need a dictionary for unfamiliar words."
"I purchased it for an intermediate Spanish class and it saves time and effort. I have 500 page English/Spanish dictionary which I use frequently but got tired of looking up every word I encountered. I did not choose a talking version because I don't need it and it is annoying to use it in a library or classroom where others are studying."
"This little device enables you to look up a single word (not a phrase or 2-3 words) and figure out the right one from a list of options (rather than explaining the context provided by the surrounding words), which is not ideal."

"You can easily look up words in either language, and you can also tap a word in the definition and the translator will then take you to the translation of that word. But overall this is a very good product, and would be invaluable for an English speaker traveling in a Spanish speaking country or vice versa."
"I am a Latin speaker and I know that some words are not the right ones we use (when you need to come from English to Spanish), but I do not see any problem because I know what the exact meaning could be....from Spanish to English I can not say the same thing because I have to trust the dictionary; However, I bought the SCD-1870 English-English dictionary and it gave me all the confidence I needed to be able to confirm and find real grammatical meanings...This combination was the best tool I have ever had to learn English."
"I was debating on buying the newer model but from reading the reviews, I didn't like the fact that the built-in cover and backlight were not available on the new model so I rebought this model. I love this electronic dictionary."
"The screen is exactly like the Franklin speller I had in 1990, with the exception of a bottom panel touch area. You would think that in 17 years of technology advances and such a high sticker price that this handheld gadget would be more like a DS or a PSP--or at least the attempt would be made. When I first realized that only words and not phrases (like "por encima de" for example) are recognized, I was very disappointed. Traveler's phrases are also included in the dictionary, and are very helpful, but if you aren't familiar with Spanish phonemes, you probably won't learn how to pronounce words from this. Most preset phrases sound good, however, with slow speaking and accurate emphasis. It's also very durable, with a nice flip cover--I carry it in my purse with me and play around with it when I'm in the Dr.'s office, on work breaks, etc."

"My aged father-in-law from Colombia finally wore out another Franklin that he has used almost daily for almost 10 years."
"So quickly, in fact, that had I not had some understanding of the language and been able to repeat things for my daughter, she likely wouldn't get much out of it in the pronunciation arena."
"This translator would be amazing if it would have the new technology."
"Whether they are bad or not, these words belong to the language and should be included in order to learn it, or at least to know that they are bad."
"My mistake."
"I purchased the unit specifically for the pronunciation of words in Spanish."
"I know enough Spanish to realize that some of the word have translations that make no sense, example: translate fall in love and you get Felony and a book cover and you get: I would like to book a tour."
"I took this with me to Cuba, and eventually stopped using it entirely because the translations were so unreliable, and it made me feel foolish."
