"You have to completely remove the old infected nail or you will never get your nail completely clear (beyond a 1/4 inch or so) and an existing infected nail will never re-attach to the nail bed - even as it grows out clear, it will float above the nail bed and re-infect. I kept up the vinegar soak as soon as it quit burning, and the nail eventually became so loose that after about two weeks it easily pulled off AND LO AND BEHOLD, underneath was a brand new clean nail growing, about a quarter of an inch at this point. I can actually trim my toe nails with a finger nail cutter.... but I use the larger toe nail cutter because I want a nice even wide cut. My nails were so bad for all those years and they were OVER an 1/8th of an inch think, and only about 1/2 or 1/3rd of the nail was attached to the nail bed. Get a sponge-type nail buffer (use the fine grit side) and once every two weeks, buff your nails to get all the shine off so that the vinegar and tea tree oil will penetrate the nail surface. If you are a runner (like me) be sure to buy your running shoes 1/2 size larger so that your toes won't jam into the end of the shoe as you run...... this could work the front of your nail loose from the nail bed and that's the start of a new infection. You may very well have a big toe with no nail at all and no new nail growing. It's something about having the nail ripped off that triggers the growth of a new nail from the nail bed in the area you can't see behind the cuticle. But the tea tree oil works best and the 9% vinegar seems to kill the fungus and change the PH of the nail and nail bed to keep the fungus from coming back."
