The reviewer I mentioned had the same problem and after venting his/her frustration revealed that tightening the screw first would let you tighten and shorten or expand the rod. Either way, even with all the frustration, I'm still giving this 4 stars, because it's very sturdy, nice looking and truly adds so much extra room to the bathroom."
"First you tighten a screw in the rod to set the "approximate" overall length and then you twist a small section of rod to "fine tune" the length and tension."
"My shower is small (56" wide) but the curved rod still adds a noticeable amount of room inside. Some websites recommend placing it 3" further back from straight rods but my guess is that this matters more with larger showers where rod will extend further out; you'll have to try it out to find the best placement. Tips: -The instructions don't specify this but the mounting brackets (parts A & B) ship inside the end caps (part E).
