"You pour distilled water into the bottom, then place a sterilizing rack on top. It is probably a good idea to get the optional support base (item 2180) unless you are going to put it on a stainless steel or similar counter top. My previous autoclave broke and they are notoriously unreliable and expensive."
"I have learned that silicone window sealant spread on the contact surfaces of the lid to the sterilizer base works fantastically to replace the recommended high temperature grease. Then one day out of laziness I noticed when I opened the sterilizer that there was about an equal amount of the sealant still on each side, the lid and the base, and I just left it there. It comes to a full pressure more quickly than it ever did before, it doesn't blow any hot liquid or gas out of the seal, and it works perfectly."
