That Disfarmer’s haunting portraits were retrieved from oblivion, that today they sell for upwards of $12,000 each at posh New York art galleries; his photographs proclaimed works of art by prestigious critics and journals and exhibited around the world? Would any of this have happened if a young New York photographer hadn’t been so in love with a pretty model that he was willing to give up his career for her; if a preacher’s son from Arkansas hadn’t spent 30 years in the Army Corps of Engineers mapping the U.S. from an airplane; if a magazine editor hadn’t felt a strange and powerful connection to the work? By tracking the unlikely, decades-long journey of an eccentric photographer's left-behind portraits, Julia Scully achieves something magical: not only does she bring small-town photographer Mike Disfarmer to life, but she also gives life to the rural Arkansans--farmers and soldiers, sweethearts and newlyweds, babies and grandparents--whose honest faces inhabit those once abandoned negatives.

"It's a given that it's not practical to buy or sell a coffee table book in Kindle format (particularly at the prices they charge). So if you're going to offer a mini book introduction in a Kindle format AND charge readers for it, give us a little meat please. It makes good business sense, particularly when it's not possible to increase size in Kindle books to view closer, or details, etc and since a reader doesn't get possession of a physical book, all you'd be giving is a few small images on a phone, pc or tablet to view. So reading the book today the text referenced a number of specific portraits and I scrolled forward hoping to find at least one or two of them in the middle maybe?. There had not been even one since beginning the book (all images included can be viewed in the sample). As I see it, I bought this little book with expectations based on the cover photo and the few images shown in the sample."

"I wish I had a little girl like you, Julie," Mary Todd Lincoln often told Julie Taft, and for the first year of the Lincoln presidency, sixteen year old Julie had the run of the White House, befriending the First Lady, playing with the Lincoln boys, and sharing priceless moments with Lincoln himself, which she noted down in her diary. In graceful and effortless prose, best-selling Kindle Singles author Cecelia Holland juxtaposes the indefatigable joy that Willie and Tad brought to Lincoln even after Washington DC became a military zone, and the sorrow that he experienced as his closest friends died in the first battles of the war.
Reviews
Find Best Price at Amazon"I haven't read a lot about Lincoln and his children other than the biographies all seem to focus on Lincoln's severe mourning of Willie's death (and his son Eddie who died at four years old) and of course, that these tragedies all led to his wife's breakdown. A sad but wonderful account of the real man behind the legend, this short is a bargain as it is offered here for .99 cents."
"Celeste Holland writes a short but lovely story of Abraham Lincoln the father."
"The children, Willie and Tad Lincoln became fast. friends with Bud and Holly Taft. Mr. Lincoln gently picked him up and carried Bud to Willie's room and tucked him into bed, so grateful his son had such a loyal friend. She was well-versed in politics of the times and spent many hours strolling by the White House, hoping to catch sight the President. A few times Lincoln noticed the sweet young girl watching him and would bow and tip his hat to her. Another day, he noticed Julia sitting on the White House steps reading and looking at the flower bed. She was from a highly reputable old aristocratic Virginia family who treated Mary with honor and respect, not like the people In Washington who ignored and snubbed her. This shocked and offended her, as she wasn't just anyone, she was the wife of the President of the United States of America, the nation's First Lady. Julie blushed, performing a slight curtsy telling Mary how thrilled she was to meet her and how fortunately to have this powerful man, himself, take her on a tour. Mary took Julie's hand, pressing it to her heart and smiled into Julia's beautiful twinkling eyes , so thankful to meet this charming young lady who impressed her joyfully, telling her how lonely she was, that Julie was the perfect touch to cheer her. They met many times enjoying tea and women talk, about children, decorating, as this was something Mary would be doing as soon as funds became available, they talked fashion" what the women on the street were wearing, where to shop, good restaurants, schooling, oh so many things and Julia asked many questions that Mary was more than happy to answer. I laughed, I cried, I dreamed, and like Abe and Mary Lincoln, I adored little Julia Taft."
"The book was about a 16 year old girl Julie Taft who was the oldest sister of two brothers who played with friends of the Lincoln boys, Willie and Tad. Julie learned to love the solemn Lincoln, who was always mussing up her hair, but who was always ready to stop what he was doing in order to play with the boys."
"Julia Taft was the daughter of one of Lincoln's friends (Horatio Nelson Taft) and older sister of two fellows close in age to Willie and Tad Lincoln."

A breathtaking, marvelous Graceling Realm book from New York Times bestselling author Kristin Cashore. Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. A New York Times bestseller. YALSA, Best Fiction for Young Adults. Amelia Elizabeth Walden Book Award Winner. 5 starred reviews. Grade 9 Up—This fantasy, shot through with romance and suspense, is set in the same world as Graceling (Dial, 2008), but on the far side of the mountain barrier in the kingdom of the Dells. It is a tumultuous time in the kingdom, as various lords are preparing to overthrow the king, and Fire is drawn into the fray. With a larger cast and a more complex canvas than Graceling , the story begins slowly and takes its time establishing itself. Fire's path is not immediately clear, and although full of action, her quest is largely internal. While the plotting is well done, there are a few quibbles about Cashore's world-building and about the role of a major character from Graceling , Leck. But, this is Fire's story, and readers will fall in love with her as she struggles with her pivotal role in the war effort as well as her complex relationships with her oldest friend and lover, Archer; with Prince Brigan, whose mind is closed to her and who becomes central to her life; and with her monster father's fearsome legacy. More adult in tone than Graceling , this marvelous prequel will appeal to older teens, who will not only devour it, but will also love talking about it.— Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York City Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Thoughtful, steamy and completely original, Fire is YA fantasy at its absolute best.”—Sabaa Tahir, author of New York Times bestselling Ember in the Ashes. And enjoy it they will, with its vivid characters, convincing fantasy elements, gripping adventure scenes, and memorable love story."

Find Best Price at Amazon"Special powers and fantasy setting aside, Fire is a character I understand to my core and faces many human struggles despite being a "monster.""
"Fire is that book for me. My copy stays near me."
"Our heroine has empathetic powers and she must use them in a nasty war between her country and a neighboring, power-hungry duke."
"It’s so refreshing to read a fantasy book that doesn’t involve dragons, fairies, vampires, etc."
"But the second half is where the story really picks up."
"And there are also women who are less feminine but still strong and there is no animosity towards the more feminine women."
"It appears that every species of creature (leopards, bugs, birds, mice, humans, etc) have a monster version. For example, a monster kitten may be bright blue with yellow streaks and purple eyes. The other difference is that the monsters have an ability to lure their prey in with their beauty and control their minds. Archer is obsessed with Fire and they have what appears to be a "friends with benefits" type of relationship. King Nash proposes immediately and Prince Brigan attacks her. Fire ends up in the royal city as a monster advisor who is trying to help the king and royal family determine who are loyal and who is a traitor for there are two factions of people who are trying to overthrow King Nash. The main reason that I didn't like it as much was because I didn't like how little time Fire spent with her love interest."
"While there are some small points to pick, the overall development of the characters is what makes this story come to life."

"So I decide after reading the book last night to take local guy a surprise today during lunch, nothing special, a case of his favorite beer that he mentioned during one of our conversations for him to have after work. This is after my check in at the grocery store saying I was grabbing a case of beer to make a friend's day better. He was totally more attentive the rest of the day and spoke more of me coming up much sooner than we had planned."
"The only thing I'd add to it is a few lines on how this could work on a relationship that has started online and long distance relationships."
"This book mainly tells girls to "friend zone" a guy and treat him like crap basically. We hit it off right off the bat, had awesome chemistry, were instant friends and getting along fine... UNTILLLL I started doing the dumb shit this book told me to do. These techniques are for immature, insecure, player type guys who need to validate their ego - this is probably who the author is and who he sounds like when he describes himself. If you have all the stuff going on - trust me - you are going to care a lot of less about the guy - you wont have to fake it... you're gonna feel fulfilled by all the other things in your life."

First as a warning to those of us who are totally unprepared for a true emergency, to learn basic skills to become self sufficient, and secondly, to live the Golden Rule."
"An excellent story based on good, simple and intelligent people helping those less fortunate during a time of upheaval. Very classy style, very skilled with societal blends and life-styles and realistic and probable approaching times."
"The writer has an unusual ability to draw in the reader gently and to spin a story that, while violent at points, does not dwell upon the violence but rather, upon the angels of our better natures."
"Love this story."
"The story is short, but gets the point across with what is portrayed. That's just the way many people are. I would like to think that; if a lot of us found ourselves in these circumstances, we would willfully step up and have a desire to learn, or to be the one to assist those who are already lost, so that they may live."
"I recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning some survival techniques, but you won't feel like you have completed the trek of the survivors after this almost short story."

"Perfect follow-up/bookend if your only real experience with Bourdain was "Kitchen Confidential.""
"Love Anthony Bourdain, so this was a great interview."
"Delightful person...totally upfront and "out there" ....prompted me to read his book "Kitchen Confidential"...which I am totally enjoying."
"Anthony Bourdain's book is a "no holds barred" expose of what happens in the kitchen without the customers' knowledge."
"It may be a bit ironic to write a review about this interview considering its content, but the restaurant world - the world in general - would be a better place if more people listened to Anthony Bourdain."
"I am glad I have read this interview, my husband is a Chef, and, it is almost an unbelievable difficult job, mainly if you want to do it the right way...thanks God we are over it, raised two wonderful boys, one is a successful hotelier who with two partners, they created a successful concept in Miami, and the other works for a Hotel Corp. Mister Bourdain, I could not sometimes understand your boldness projected through your programs, sometimes bordering the line of arrogance, yet, after reading and understanding you better, I do take my hat off!."
"It was a very short read."

"Written prior to Trump' s inauguration Dr. Decker uses FBI profiling methods to predict the president-elect' s future behavior."
"This book gave me reasons for my feelings about him."
"In addition, predictions are proffered for the reader's consideration, based on the profile."
"This tells me that as he started his presidency so it will remain."
"From the minute you get it in your hands, you will see why it is funny."
"With a textbook description of narcissism the author presents an accurate forecast of Trumpism that has proven to be accurate over the first year with the exception of the economic forecast, which has proven to be completely wrong as of Jan 2018."
"It was astonishing to see how many predictions have already turned into reality since this booklet was written and published."

I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to follow this regimen become very familiar with the contents, and bring the manual to their health care provider. If there are any medical conditions present, as there usually are, then this regimen should be done under the supervision of a health care provider who is familiar with Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic nutrition.
