"I've been using these Nighthawk CO & explosive gas alarms for well over a decade. I've never had one false alarm."
"We ahve used this one since 2012 when we converted to a gas furnace. It has never gone off thankfully but we trust this brand and unit.We got this one for our living room where we have a propane stove.Love the fact that these last 7 years and that they let you know when its time to replace."
"Was looking for a new carbon monoxide detector and saw that this kidde model detects both co2 and gas."
"A carbon monoxide detector was on their wish list and I chose it because of the good service I had with a different model."
"Really hope I never need to know how well this works, but glad I have it."
"CPS Tech stated that alarm was properly installed, but clearly was not operating correctly.. Needless to say, I will be returning item..."
"OK, sorry about that, I did the explosive gas test... I blasted it with my pipe soldering torch (no flame) plenty of "Propane" and over 10 minutes of testing I was shocked how bad it is."
"We were very excited when it arrived and have been looking forward to it, however, we had noticed the manufacturer date was 10/15 (4 of them) and 1 with 01/16, We were disappointed because this is the date Kidde uses for their 5-year warranty coverage, which means these devices were already one year old, and 10 months old, respectively."

BW Technologies XT-XWHM-Y-NA GasAlertMax XT II 4-Gas Detector with Pump, Combustible, O2, H2S and CO, Yellow
The BW Technologies XT-XWHM-Y-NA GasAlertMax XT II 4-gas detector with pump is a handheld, four-gas detector that uses an electrochemical cell sensor to monitor ambient H 2 S and carbon monoxide (CO), a capillary pore fuel cell to measure oxygen levels, and a catalytic bead sensor to monitor ambient combustible gases continuously. The detector has an alphanumeric LCD screen that shows real-time concentration of four monitored gases, the alarm type, the calibration requirements, the self-test pass or fail, and the battery life remaining. This detector is set to alert to when gas levels reach any of four limits: a low-alarm level, indicating moderate danger; a high-alarm level, indicating significant danger; a short-term exposure limit (STEL), the maximum gas concentration to which workers can be exposed continuously for a short period of time without serious risk; and a time-weighted average (TWA) limit, the maximum average exposure that personnel can experience over an eight-hour work shift without serious risk. Specifications Gas Types. H 2 S, carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O 2 ), Combustible Gases (%LEL). Measuring Range. H 2 S: 0 to 200 ppm. CO: 0 to 1,000 ppm. O 2 : 0 to 30%. Combustible: 0 to 100% LEL, 0 to 5% v/v. Resolution. H 2 : 1.0 ppm. CO: 1.0 ppm. O 2 : 0.1%. Combustible: 1% LEL, 0.1% v/v. Temperature Range. -4 to +122 degree F/-20 to +50 degree C. Humidity Range. 10% to 100% RH (non-condensing). Audible Alarm Sound Level. 95 dB. Dimensions. 5.1 x 3.2 x 1.9 inches/13.0 x 8.1 x 4.7 cm (H x W x D)*. Weight. 11.92 oz./338 g. Battery. AA alkaline with 14 hour life(at +68 to 122 degree F/+20 to 50 degree C). *H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back. Pre-set limits often include a low-alarm level, indicating a gas concentration that poses a moderate danger; a high-alarm level, indicating a gas concentration that poses a large danger; a short-term exposure limit (STEL), the maximum gas concentration to which workers can be exposed continuously for a short period of time without serious risk of harm, and time-weighted average (TWA) limit, the maximum average exposure personnel can experience over the course of an eight-hour work shift without serious risk of harm. Most gas detectors also feature LCD screens that provide a variety of information including gasses detected and their concentrations, pre-set exposure limits, and battery level.

"Make sure you check that when you get yours but it looks like Amazon has fixed the issue of sending out old items. It breaks it down into different groups in how fast it will alarm based on how much of a reading it will get. This prevents a small reading from something like a cigarette or from the oven door opening shortly from setting off the alarm and being an annoyance. I'm using the wall plug but people have complained about it draining battery still then."
"(just don't have it too far away or it may not be as effective in the case of a CO leak). We were just measuring the fumes from an engine that was switched off, just as if you came home, parked and turned off your car, got out and shut the garage door. We are very happy with how the Kiddie Nighthawk CO detector works and are very glad to have it in our home - great peace of mind from a great product that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others."
"The unit has a 5 year warranty and 5 year expected use life, so I called Kidde customer support. She also commented they have had problems with Amazon shipping such items that were already past their 5 year service life when they were sold. If you buy one of these units from Amazon (or elsewhere) my advice would be the check the sticker on the back of the unit as soon as you receive it, and verify that the manufacture date is reasonably current."
"The unit had been plugged in for a number of years before it failed."

Best Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Nest Protect Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm, Battery (2nd Generation), 3 Pack
Nest Protect 3 Pack Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm. You wouldn't put up with a rotary phone or a black & white TV. Nest protect is the first alarm you can hush from your phone. Simply walk to the Nest protect that noticed the problem and open the Nest app. When there’s carbon monoxide, Nest Protect tells you where it’s hiding.
Reviews
"Random low-battery chirping, ear piercing function test... getting up on a ladder at least twice a year to change batteries wether they need it or not... you get the idea. After seeing some of the negative reviews around random alarm problems I intentionally delayed purchase until a 2nd generation product was available. With the new Protect 2 out and getting almost universally positive reviews, I went ahead and took the plunge following a 4 year old First Alert CO combination unit dying with 3 chirps every minute at 3:00AM. I'm also cautiously optimistic more features could be added later to the existing hardware... as Nest already has a track record of doing this with other products (Nest Thermostat added air wave which is a fantastic feature). There is also a nice very solid mounting plate with mounting holes for probably every international junction box imaginable as well as some sheetrock screws if you are installing it in bare sheetrock and a few extra wire-nuts if you need those. Do NOT remove the battery activation tab until you are ready to program the Nest Protects! Here's how I installed my 8 units in a relatively short amount of time (90 minutes total) with some tips that might help you out. Your not-yet-programmed Protects are on your left, your workspace and mobile device is in the middle and your already programmed protects are on your right... make sure you know your wifi network name & password as well as your mobile having a good solid charge (you're going to be at this for a while). This all takes at least a couple of minutes, if it sits there for 90 seconds don't give up, it's still working and everything should be fine. Don't pull the tab to turn on the 2nd protect until the app is connected or connecting to the 1st device... you can cheat a bit and pull the tab and choose English language about 30 seconds before the app says to do this and install will go fine... if doing many Protects this saves a bit of time. Once done with all programming move on to physical activation by choosing not to add any more Protects from the app. Turn off AC breaker to your wired detectors (if your house is newer they are probably all on a single circuit breaker)... remove the old protector and mounting plate and disconnect its wiring harness. Tap the button one time to verify that the detector you are installing is the correct one for that location (you labeled your boxes right?). Line up the plastic ring on the mounting plate with the round detent on the Protect. If it seems too hard (it's not, assuming you can turn a screwdriver, stand on a ladder and understand electrical basics) you can hire a pro... Nest provides info on how to get in touch with one on a flyer in the box. There are other minor things I think could be improved.... the square design is a pain in the neck to get aligned properly so that it doesn't look crooked on a ceiling... while this won't bother everyone it will annoy enough of us that we will keep mentioning it. Currently Nest does not offer the ability to customize the Protect settings on individual devices. Nest should step up here as they surely know that many homes are going to need a pile of these things and they aren't exactly cheap. While I was confident enough in the design of the Protect 2 to spend a whopping $794 on eight of them Nest has left a bad taste in many peoples mouths by not addressing 1st gen problems. If similar problems were to occur several years down the road with the Protect 2 I similarly don't expect much from Nest in the way of a real resolution... even though Nest has been acquired by Google they are the new kid on the block.... they should be really stepping up for their customers instead of responding to negative comments about Protect 1 with "contact customer support"."
"I live in a smaller apartment and sometimes when I cook, my old alarm would go off (I dunno why, I cook all the time, in fact I've got something cooking while I type this review). Note: This is still an early review and I can't really judge it until I've used it. At first I didn't think the night light would work very well but in the dark it provides just the perfect amount of light. Also the wired version still comes with batteries so the testing can be done when you have it unplugged and it will still work if the electricity goes out. Update 8/4: Last night I was cooking up a delicious meal and I had enough smoke to trigger the alarm. When it first noticed the smoke it gave a verbal warning that it detected smoke and would sound the alarm soon. Just last night the power went out and it told me "Heads up, the power is out.""

Best Smoke Detectors & Fire Alarms

First Alert BRK 9120BFF Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single
A loose neutral (white wire) connection within the home junction box could prompt a device malfunction. Designed to be wired directly into your home's electrical system, this hardwired smoke detector features a backup battery that helps keep the alarm functioning even in the event of a power outage. This smoke alarm can integrate with up to 12 other First Alert or BRK hardwired alarms and features a latching indicator that identifies which unit triggered the alarm. The 9120B AC-powered smoke alarm with battery backup includes these features: Perfect mount system including a gasketless base for easy installation and new mounting bracket that keeps the alarm secure over a wide rotation range to allow for perfect alignment. Open mounting design for easy installation with side load battery compartment for quick replacement and interconnectable up to 18 units (12 smoke, 6 CO/heat/relay).
Reviews
"Replace an entire house that had previous BRK 4120B's that were outside of the supported working status and were randomly going off or failing."
"After looking at the 3 units, I noticed corrosion on the 110 volt pins and across the circuit board itself, which may be the failure reason."
"His older AC powered smoke alarm had failed, (different manufacturer). • A wiring harness with a plug in connector. • An instruction manual. • A dust cover to use if the home is under construction so the smoke alarm is not exposed to dust and dirt. The orange wire is not stripped, to remove the insulation and expose the conducting wire, and the tip has been dipped into a plastic sealant to avoid any shorting issues. It is located on the side of the alarm module and it swings out to allow you to change the battery and it latches closed."
"When we had the house built it had all Kidde alarms but it was easy to put these in instead as they came with all mounting hardware needed. These came with 9V backup batteries pre-installed, I just had to remove the plastic tab to activate them."
"one of them is at the top of a high wall making it hard to reach without a long ladder so it is hardwired, the others are all run by battery."
"Being a fire protection specialist for over 35 years, I chose these because they have all the features I need, plus the price was great."
"You either have to remove the original mounting bracket and might have to deal with touch-up painting (or have to deal with the original bracket that was painted over)... ... or, install the new bracket on top of the existing bracket."
"Fits the standard smoke detector jack to replace your existing wired detector."

"It does move the extinguisher a bit off of the cage so mounting options became a bit limited as opposed to some mounts that fit a bit more flush against the cage."
"To secure the extinguisher to the upper bracket I used heavy duty 2in wide velcro on both the bracket and the bottle."
"Very nice quality, just know that it does not come with clamps and when ordering the bolt style clamps the measurements are for inside diameter so lets say you are mounting the bracket around a 1 3/4 inch roll bar like on my Polaris RZR, you have to include the bracket so it makes it roughly 2" but then you have to order a clamp that is 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 because you are going around the Outside diameter of the pipe, not the inside diameter."
"Haven't had to use it yet... but it sure look purty hanging from the roll cage!"
"If there is a downside, it is that the pieces fit together a little loosely--so with the weight of the fire extinguisher getting pushed around on the dirt roads it does some rattling around."
"Got this for my sports car to mount an extinguisher in front of the passenger seat."
"I knew this going in, and I suppose they might be thinking that the mounting options vary to greatly to include anything, but it would be nice if it included some band clamps or bolts for mounting it."
"Holds extinguisher tightly."

"I bought this as soon as my husband started making noises about wanting to deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving. He is very enthusiastic about fire related things, but is not always properly cautious about such things."
"2 years back on July 1st (it was a very dry year) the field behind our place goes up in flame due to a neighbor playing with fireworks. I stop the flames from growing due to the field still burning I know it is only time. I used some steel stock to mock up a bracket mount, used the USCG approved bottle mount found here on Amazon and grade 8 hardware everywhere. I am fairly certain there is no way this is coming off even in a accident (should be a major concern to us with pressurized steel bottles in our trucks), even if it did come off, it would have to work its way out from under the rack, then thru the 1" cargo netting."
"I went and grabbed this extinguisher and quickly was able to put out the fire."
"Got this fire extinguisher for a second home."
"It's a shame fire extinguishers are so expensive."
"I bought this for wood cutting, target shooting and keep it downstairs meanwhile."
"Well made hope I never have to use it."
"Never had to use it, but helps with home owners insurance costs."
