Nest's no-button design is cool, but using a thermostat is not a lecture in UX minimalism, and black-and-chrome doesn't really disappear into the background of my home (white trim and all). Granted, we didn't also install a second Nest to have more temperature sensors, and we didn't buy their $200 talking smoke detectors which also report environmental statistics back to the thermostat. Most people won't care about this but being a network security engineer, I'm impressed that the thermostat has exactly 0 open TCP ports, outbound communication is with one IP, and total traffic is very modest."

I had been wanting to get a WiFi Thermostat for a long time now, but I held off because I was worried that I would buy one that wouldn't be compatible with my home or that I wouldn't be able to figure out how to install it. You select the wires that your current thermostat has, and then the app tells you what to label them and where they will go in the new thermostat. I had never replaced a thermostat before, and it took me under 30 minutes (which includes unboxing, looking for screwdriver, looking for AC unit shut off switch, watching how-to videos included with the app, etc). The app is handy because it also tells you your local Hi and Low temps from the forecast as well as the humidity in your home, upcoming schedule, set temp, actual temp, and the background is either blue, red, or grey depending on if your system is on Cool, Heat, or off at the moment. My well water system supplies 55-degree cold water, so changing to the hot water made an 80-degree difference (my hot water is set at 135-degrees). I also have a heat pump hot water tank so the cost of hot water is significantly lower than an non-heat pump electric or gas hot water tank. Just make sure you understand that the installation considerations of providing warm air and hot water to the unit will significantly affect the performance of the unit. Update - So, after a while the humidifier Pad gets clogged and the water starts running out of the bottom of the unit."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I first tested the water heater on LOW and ran water in the sink. The heater turned on and the water got mildly warmer (read, still cold), which I was expecting. Finally, I turned the heater on HIGH and the water from the faucet was too hot to keep my hands in it. Because I knew that not enough flow would cause the heater to turn off, because it requires 0.5GPM to activate, I had the shower turned all the way up with a 2.5GPM shower head. I thought that the problem could be not enough flow but not because it wasn't reaching the 0.5GPM but because it was not getting enough water through the heater to keep it from overheating and causing the heat protection system to shut off the heater. Because of this, I'll be testing out running the heater on Medium to see if it gets the water hot enough for a shower. Of course, some will say that it could still be that there was not enough water flow but if that was the case then the heater should just turn off and not come back on. This means that the flow rate of your water system is going to change as the pressure changes and this translates to corresponding water temperature changes. The water heater overheat protection will turn off the water heater when operating on the High setting if there is not enough flow. The point I'm trying to make is that unless you can make your own temperature controller, you might want to consider a different model, unless you don't mind cold water during your shower."
