"Considering my satisfaction with the hero3, picking up a hero4 was inevitable. **UPDATE: Took off a star for questionable issue: While i haven't come across any major glitches, it does seem to hiccup here and there (my hero3 did the same), the heat that comes off it can be more than warm, but it seems others are experiencing rather hot temperatures. While not entirely reassuring, i've heard some folks have positive experiences dealing with gopro on their overheating matters. What i like about the hero 4 black: -4K at usable framerates (hero3 could only do 15fps). -Sweet 120fps slow motion at 1080. -More wireless connectivity(some hiccups, but can work). -More slowmotion. -Sharpness is satisfactory. -Lowlight is decent enough. -More manual control. What's not to like? Yea, it's odd and i would have much preferred the flagship get the screen, that being said, i've gotten along very well with my screen-less hero 3, because i have a cautious understanding of the angles it can capture at narrow/medium/wide settings. heat wears electronics down, reducing their life, if this thing's average temperature is 130degrees, how long will it live? The 4k from the hero4 looks pretty satisfying, maybe not as sharp as bigger/professional cameras, but this is a tiny actioncamera, and i don't see it reasonable to hold it to quite the same standards. Bitrate: 4k gives you up to 60mpbs, which may sound low, but other more expensive cameras use a similar setup and get nice results, and the gopro does pretty well here as well."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I've used them for everything from B-roll footage, timelapses, drones/quadcopters, helmet cams, weather balloons, high speed recording of MMA and plenty other things. It handles color beautifully, and allows you to record 1080p at 60fps so even the quickest turns and motions are captured accurately and not lost in frame sync. The Go Pro Hero 3+ Black Edition offers just about the same specs, but lacks a live view remote. Sony's image sensor is far superior, its stabilizer is subtle and effective, and most importantly, there seems to have been a fine display of quality control and testing, whereas Go Pro absolutely craps themselves in that regard. The AS100V handles dynamic range very intelligently in both bright and dark settings, and adjusts the exposure faster than most other cameras. This means that if you're wearing it on a bike and ride out of a tunnel, it won't take 3 seconds to adjust to the drastic light change. I would assume that the the Sony had a larger aperture lens while the Hero 2 had to compensate with ISO, but they're both f/2.4, so I have no explanation other than an improved CCD. Finally, the game changer: You can opt to record in XAVC format if you buy a high speed memory card. It's a proprietary format, but it is supported by all current Adobe products as well as Vegas and other mainstream video editing applications. At the time of writing, this is easily the best in class for action cams, and probably the best video capture quality you will find behind the DSL price-range."
"[edit: see my update on the camera, at the end of this review]. I've used the GoPro Hero 3+ Black and wanted something better. The AS100V Action Camera is better in just about every way: much better battery life; better picture quality; but most of all, it includes motion stabilization. This is extremely important for an action camera, and not just for the obvious reason that it makes the video more stable. While some of this can be removed in post production using Mercalli, or similar stabilizer, the better way is to not allow the shake or shimmy to be recorded in the first place. This flaw pretty much makes the LiveView Remote not fit for its intended purpose. If you want to use the viewfinder to help frame the picture while you are filming outdoors in full sunshine, you simply will not be able to do that. You can, however, completely un-do the strap, and then attempt to get the velcro back through the opening of the buckle, using just one hand. However, because the end of the velcro strap is doubled over and therefore barely fits through the hole, I found that even after several tries, this took over one minute each time I wanted to use the view finder. Even if your are wearing the camera (e.g., on a helmet), the "watch reading" approach to viewing the video is awkward. So, while the "Dick Tracy 2-Way TV" is initially appealing, for those of us old enough to remember that comic strip, it is actually a lousy way to view video while simultaneously participating in some sort of activity. I realize that this remote viewer is not designed for watching the video while the camera is mounted in a quadcopter, but it sure would be nice to be able to step into a group on the other side of the room and still at least turn the camera on and off, or snap some still photos. So, here's the bottom line: I would highly recommend the camera, but the Live-View Remote is a terrible product, and I don't see how anyone could be happy with its features and performance. which makes it really easy to strap to the front of your chest, hat, head, or helmet. Second, I have now used the PlayMemories Mobile on an iPhone 6 Plus to view live video and control the camera. Basically, all you can do is see the video you are taking, with a slight delay, and start and stop recording."

Verdict. - The GoPro Hero 5 Black is a great $400 action camera intended for a very specific market of videographers. "Aside from the obvious disappointment of the camera's failure and its effect on ruining countless photo and video opportunities for me and my family, GoPro's response when I contacted them about the failure has possibly been even worse. The bottom line is that if you are planning to use your action camera in the water (as so many of us are), you should spare yourself from the flawed Hero 5 black and, even more, from GoPro's terrible service. Overall, my disappointment in the failure of the camera remains and my disappointment in GoPro as a company has grown. The miscellaneous pieces including screws, mounts, and adhesive pads all work. It is sturdy enough that I'll use it and trust it with my GoPro, but I won't be holding it off the edge of the Empire State Building. It does have a strap that you can put around your wrist for added safety, which is a nice touch."

"The only two pieces of plastic on the unit are two non-critical plastic tension screws that could be replaced with a 5-cent wingnut if they were to ever break or get lost. I eventually found the sweet spot for my counterweights and repositioned the handle to the front position. I see so many people on Youtube who would vastly improve their videos if they would start using a stabilizer. You won't be able to do that with a larger stabilizer because a lot of the units extend 2-3 feet below the camera. This stabilizer is considerably lighter than my Opteka unit that kills my arm after using it for 5 minutes, not to mention the Roxant costs 1/3 the price and works equally as well."

"The Steadytracker was too heavy and too big(i would bump the legs into the wall or furniture or even my own legs on low shots) and it was extremely hard to get gimbal type of smoothness. However, using the steadytracker did teach me how to move with a stabilizer so I was very happy to see how smooth my shots are using the Roxant. I will say even though it's not perfectly balanced on my G7, I am still getting smoother shots with it than I did with my Canon on the steadytracker."
