Not so much that I could turn them by hand, but they needed a good "snugging" to make me feel confident in the connection. PLEASE, if you buy this item, bear in mind it is made in China and the quality control is lacking. UPDATE 11/16: Converted both units to Amsteel Blue Synthetic, which is factory approved on the newer gray drum winches."
