The lid can be removed very easily even if bowl of water is full in case you need to reach the food underneath. I would only suggest vendor to add a second hole on the other side of the bowl so you could remove easily but again no big deal. "I will say that because he is a huge slobbering dog, water tends to get underneath his metal water bowl and so we do find we have to take the top lid and dump it out rather frequently."
