"Doesn't really run out (maybe with ridiculous amount of usage), doesn't matter if it's wet, dirty, hot or cold. It is also sharpened on the ergonomically correct side so produce a pretty nice amount of sparks that quickly light up fire starting materials. Although you can use a knife or other sharp tool to make sparks why do so when then there's a perfectly good designated scraper. I recommend you guys start scrapping from the bottom 1 inch or so, so that once you wear off that part you just go up rather than having wasted the entire tool if you used it whole length."
"Break off a three inch section of rat tail file and scrape it along the firesteel for a MUCH more effective spark! The fire steel will eventually wear out [be used up] so expect to replace it with heavy frequent use. Butane lighters won't work at all at high altitude. Do bear in mind that you MUST have "tender" that will catch fire easily from from a shower of sparks onto a pile of magnesium shavings. Bits of pure cotton saturated with a petroleum product [Vasaline] This tender MUST burn long enough and hot enough to make bigger flammable materials burn. If you spend time in a remote area or hike forest trails etc."

However, another side note, the bucket says "up to 20 years" but the best by date on the Cheese Powder was 26-April-2027. 1- When people buy food storage they buy it to be prepared and having a damage product just isn't acceptable. 2- Items that have a best by date should be noted on the outside of the bucket."
"I didn't do it, and I wouldn't do it in a survival situation, throw some sandwich bags in the bucket. I seasoned the first few hearty vegetable mixes because the flavor was clumped up in the bottom, and when I did eat the flavoring, it still didn't overpower the dish. The meals vary per day, but do end up feeling bland about ten days in. Ten days is as long as I went without breaking the pattern and it was not fun, but I've managed to keep about three days on and one day off this food source without feeling suicidal. If you're not going to eat it, do not remove anything from the bucket. I took out one bag of each product and put the remaining back into the bucket."
"The potatoes do separate from the rest of the soup mix in the bag, so you do have to mix it up before cooking if you are making less than the 6 servings that each bag contains.
